Chapter 5 - The Trap at the DocksThe elimination of Dr. Sterling was swift and quiet, handled with the chilling efficiency that defined the Vance syndicate. But as I quickly learned in Marcus's world, cutting off one head of a snake only agitates the rest of the body.

Three weeks after my arrival at the estate, the fragile peace we had built shattered into chaos.
It was a Tuesday afternoon. Marcus had been called away to an emergency summit at the downtown shipping terminals—a rare daytime departure that usually signaled a major turf war with the rival Rossi family, who controlled the southern ports.
I was in the estate's sunroom reading a storybook to Chloe when the heavy oak front doors echoed with the sound of splintering wood and shouting voices.
Before I could stand up, Mrs. Gable burst into the sunroom, her face completely drained of color.
"Miss Williams! They've breached the outer gates!" she gasped, clutching a heavy-duty security radio in her shaking hands. "The guards at checkpoint one are down. We have armed intruders inside the perimeter."
My heart leaped into my throat. The Rossi family. They knew Marcus was downtown at the terminals, leaving the estate vulnerable. They had come for his most valuable weakness: Chloe.
"Get to the panic room," I ordered, my nursing training kicking in with clinical, cold adrenaline. I grabbed Chloe’s hand, pulling her up from the rug. "Mrs. Gable, show us the secure vault behind the library."
"No time!" Mrs. Gable cried, her voice rising in panic as heavy footsteps thundered up the grand staircase outside. "They're already in the main hallway!"
"Chloe, run!" I scooped the little girl into my arms, sprinting toward the private service staircase tucked behind the pantry.
We scrambled down the narrow, winding stone steps into the dark, damp wine cellars beneath the mansion—a labyrinth of stone arches and vintage oak racks that smelled of old wood and vinegar.
"Sarah, I'm scared," Chloe whispered into my shoulder, clinging to my neck so hard it hurt.
"I've got you, sweetie," I panted, my lungs burning as I navigated the pitch-black aisles by memory alone. "We're going to hide, and your daddy is going to come get us. I promise."
We slipped behind a massive, floor-to-ceiling rack of vintage Bordeaux, pressing ourselves flat against the cold stone wall. The darkness was absolute, broken only by the faint, distant beams of flashlights filtering down the stone stairwell.
Heavy boots crunched on the gravel and stone floor above us.
"Clear the cellar!" a gruff voice barked. "Vance keeps his safe files down here. Sweep every rack!"
The beam of a flashlight swept across the stone floor just ten feet away from our hiding spot. I held my breath, squeezing my eyes shut, wrapping my arms completely around Chloe to shield her small body. Every second stretched into an eternity.
Please, I prayed silently, my mind flashing to Marcus standing on the cliff edge with a gun. Please let him get here in time.
Suddenly, a deafening explosion rocked the mansion above us—the sound of heavy ordnance blowing through the front entrance doors. Automatic gunfire echoed through the stone corridors, followed by shouting, the shattering of glass, and the unmistakable sound of a well-coordinated military-style raid.
Marcus had returned.
The men searching the cellar froze, shouting curses into their comm units. "Fall back! The boss is back! He’s at the front gates—move, move, move!"
Footsteps scrambled backward in a panicked retreat, racing up the stone stairs and out toward the service exit.
For a long, agonizing minute, the cellar fell completely silent, save for the distant pop of gunfire upstairs and the ragged sound of my own breathing.
"Sarah?"
A deep, breathless voice echoed from the bottom of the cellar stairs.
"Marcus!" I cried out, stepping out from behind the wine rack with Chloe still clutched in my arms.
Marcus appeared out of the shadows, his clothes dusty, a smear of blood across his cheek, holding a smoking submachine gun at his side. The moment his slate-grey eyes landed on us, the weapon dropped from his hand and clattered against the stone floor.
In two long strides, he crossed the cellar, pulling both Chloe and me into a fierce, suffocating embrace. He buried his face in Chloe’s hair, his broad shoulders shaking with a violent, overwhelming wave of relief.
"Are you hurt?" he demanded, pulling back to look us over with frantic, trembling hands. "Did anyone touch you?"
"We're fine," I breathed, tears finally spilling over my cheeks. "We're safe."
Marcus looked up at me, his eyes burning with an intensity that went far beyond gratitude. He reached out, his warm, calloused hand gently wiping a tear from my cheek.
"You protected her," he whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "You ran into the danger to keep her safe."
"She's my patient, Mr. Vance," I said softly, meeting his gaze without flinching. "And she's my family now."

Marcus didn't answer with words. Instead, he leaned forward and pressed his lips softly against mine.
The kiss was desperate, tender, and charged with all the unspoken terror and survival of the past month. It was the moment the gilded cage finally shattered, and the mafia boss and the nursing student collided in the dark.
