Chapter 4 - The House of Cards Collapses

The days following the gala were a masterclass in swift, clinical execution. The public exposure had broken the thin veneer of Daniel’s respectability, and without the Arrington Trust’s capital to shield him, his creditors descended like vultures.
Daniel sat in the tiny, dingy office of a low-tier defense attorney in Brooklyn. The luxury suits were gone, replaced by a wrinkled jacket he had managed to pull from his storage unit. His phone had been ringing continuously for seventy-two hours—not with offers of support, but with demands for immediate payment from banks, vendors, and the luxury car dealership that had already repossessed his sports car.
"Can we fight the trust forfeiture?" Daniel demanded, slamming his fist onto the attorney’s cluttered desk. "There has to be a loophole! I spent six years building that brand! She was just a housewife! She can't just kick me out of my own company!"
The lawyer, a tired man named Miller, sighed, flipping through the massive stack of documents Arthur Vance had provided. "Mr. Vale, I'm going to be straight with you. You didn't build this company. The Arrington Trust provided ninety percent of the initial capital, the land deeds, and the corporate credit lines. The contract you signed when you married Elena explicitly states that any breach of fiduciary duty—including using company funds for non-business entities—results in an immediate, retroactive forfeiture of your executive shares."
Miller looked up, his eyes filled with a grim reality. "And that’s the least of your problems. The forensic audit your wife submitted to the District Attorney is ironclad. They have the IP addresses from the transfers. They have your digital signatures. They even have the text messages where Celeste Arden explicitly asks you to 'take another million from the hotel fund' to pay for her art gallery's European tour."
"Celeste will back me up," Daniel said desperately, his voice cracking. "She has a team of investors. We can pool our resources, fight the criminal charges, and start a new firm."
The lawyer let out a dry, humorless laugh. He reached into his drawer and pulled out a fresh morning newspaper, sliding it across the desk.
SCANDAL SOCIALITE TURNS STATE'S EVIDENCE: Celeste Arden Stripped of Assets, Blames Ex-CEO Daniel Vale for "Financial Coercion."
Daniel’s breath caught in his throat. He stared at the headline, his hands shaking so violently the paper tore.
"She... she turned on me?" he whispered.
"She signed a cooperation agreement at 8:00 a.m. yesterday," Miller said indifferently. "She surrendered the diamond bracelet, the luxury townhouse you bought her, and all the funds remaining in her foundation in exchange for a suspended sentence. She told the prosecutors that you forced the money onto her, that you told her your wife was incompetent and that you were the sole owner of the capital. She completely hung you out to dry, Daniel."

Daniel sank back into the cheap vinyl chair, the absolute weight of his isolation crushing him. He had abandoned his wife while she bled on a surgery table. He had turned off his phone to cut a cake with a woman he thought was his true love. And the moment the storm arrived, that very woman had discarded him like a piece of garbage.
He remembered Elena’s quiet, pale face in the hospital room, the way she had looked at him when he said, "But you didn't die." He had thought her silence was submission. He had no idea it was the quiet before the avalanche.
