Chapter 2 - The Architecture of DeceitThe signature at the bottom of the medical consultation intake form belonged to Julian Vance—my younger cousin, my appointed corporate vice president, and the man I had trusted like a brother since we lost our parents in the Chicago winter storm of twenty years ago.

According to the clinic records stamped by a private OB/GYN clinic in the loop, Claire had visited the facility three months ago, terrified, exhausted, and newly pregnant. Because she was cut off from our shared accounts—having stubbornly refused my divorce settlement payout out of sheer pride—she had used an emergency contact number listed in her old medical database.
Whose number was on file as her primary emergency contact and financial guarantor?
Julian’s.
The clinic files showed that Julian had intercepted her initial call, met her in person under the guise of "offering family support," and then systematically forced her into signing a non-disclosure and financial waiver. He had threatened her, convincing her that I wanted nothing to do with her, that I had remarried in secret, and that if she ever attempted to contact me or my security detail, my enemies would use her pregnancy to destroy both of us. He had given her a meager cash payout of five thousand dollars—a drop in the bucket—and told her to disappear into the city.
Julian hadn't just pushed her out. He had engineered her isolation.
My fist clenched so hard my knuckles cracked audibly in the quiet suite. Dr. Chen stepped back, giving me space as the full weight of the manipulation settled over my mind. Every blocked text message, every bounced email, every intercepted letter—Julian had managed the communications grid of my estate for years. He knew every backdoor, every firewall, and every blind spot.
“Is she going to make it, Lila?” I asked, my voice terrifyingly calm as I stared at the signature.
“She’s severely dehydrated, and her iron levels are critically low,” Dr. Chen reported professionally, adjusting her glasses. “The baby’s heartbeat is steady, but weak. She needs intravenous fluids, round-the-clock nourishment, and absolute rest for the next week. More than anything, Roman, she needs psychological safety. When she woke up for a brief moment twenty minutes ago and saw where she was, she started hyperventilating. She thought she was being held captive.”
The words felt like physical blows to my chest. Captive. In the very house where she had once walked as queen.
“Administer whatever she needs,” I instructed, turning toward the door. “I’ll be downstairs.”
“Roman,” Dr. Chen called out softly. “When she wakes up, she’s going to be terrified of you. You need to tread carefully. Whatever Julian told her... she believes you abandoned her to starve.”
I didn't answer. I walked out of the suite, down the curved marble staircase, and into the grand foyer where my chief of security, Marco, was waiting with a secondary data tablet.
“You look like you found the snake, boss,” Marco said, noting my expression.
“Find Julian,” I ordered, my eyes locked on the front double doors as a sleek black sedan pulled up the private drive. “Bring him to the basement wine cellar. I don't care if he’s asleep, at a club, or with a client. Drag him here.”
“Already on it,” Marco replied, a grim smile touching his lips. “His phone pinged twenty minutes ago from his downtown penthouse. My team is five minutes out.”
While Marco’s men moved to scoop up my treacherous cousin, I walked into my private study, poured a single finger of neat bourbon, and pulled up the internal surveillance logs of the estate. I began cross-referencing every financial transfer Julian had authorized over the last six months.
What I found made my blood boil.

Julian hadn't just isolated Claire; he had been systematically embezzling from the restaurant supply chain accounts, routing funds through a series of offshore shell companies registered under fake names—names that anagrammed neatly into corporate entities controlled by my primary business rival, Viktor Vance... wait, no. Viktor Vance was dead. The accounts led directly to a domestic shell company managed by none other than Julian’s personal legal proxy.
He wasn't just betraying my marriage. He was trying to cannibalize my entire empire while slowly starving my unborn child on the streets of Chicago.
