Chapter 2 - The Tables Turn“What is the meaning of this?!” Carol shrieked, her voice pitching upward into panic as the realization began to dawn that something had gone terribly, irrevocably wrong. “You can’t just walk into this house! This is private property!”

“Actually, Mrs. Mercer, it is private property,” Daniel agreed calmly, pulling a crisp, blue-backed legal document from his leather briefcase. “Which is why you are currently trespassing.”

Carol scoffed, though her hands were visibly trembling now. “Don’t be ridiculous! My son, Ryan, owns this house! I helped him pick out the crown molding!”

“Ryan owns nothing,” Daniel stated clearly, his voice echoing off the high ceilings of the foyer. “This estate, along with all structural assets, vehicles, and commercial properties utilized by your son, is held entirely by a private holding company owned exclusively by Mrs. Emma Vance-Scott.”

My maiden name. The name she had spent six years pretending didn't matter because she thought I was just a dependent housewife.

Carol turned around, staring up the staircase, finally spotting me standing near the banister, wrapped in my robe, looking down at her like a spectator at an execution.

“Emma!” Carol sputtered, pointing a shaking finger at me. “Tell these men to leave! Tell them what kind of ungrateful, hysterical lies you’ve been telling! Make her get down here right now!”

I didn't move. I didn't blink. I let the silence stretch until the weight of it crushed whatever authority she thought she possessed.

“She isn't coming down to cater to you, Carol,” Daniel said, stepping forward and holding out my personal phone—the one she had snatched from my nightstand twenty minutes earlier. “And I’ll take that back now. Tampering with personal communications of an individual during a medical emergency adds a very interesting criminal charge to your trespass citation.”

Carol instinctively snatched her hand back as if the phone were burning hot. The police sergeant stepped up beside Daniel, pulling out a small notepad.

“Mrs. Mercer, you have been formally named in an emergency property exclusion order,” the officer announced, his tone flat and procedural. “You are required to vacate these premises immediately. Any refusal will result in immediate physical removal and arrest for trespassing and domestic harassment.”

Carol looked from the police officer to Daniel, and finally back up at me, her chest heaving with furious disbelief.

“You’re calling the cops on your own family over a little attitude?!” Carol screamed, losing all pretense of high-society composure. “Wait until Ryan hears about this! When my son gets home from his client meeting, he’ll throw you out on the street!”

“Ryan isn't at a client meeting, Carol,” I finally spoke, my voice raspy from the fever but cutting through the foyer like steel. “He’s at his girlfriend’s apartment across town. And by the time he gets back, his consulting office will be locked, his car will be towed, and he won't even have a key to get through the front gate.”

The house went dead silent.

Carol staggered backward, her expensive cream coat rustling as her knees buckled slightly against the mahogany entry table.
