Chapter 5 - The Snake in the GardenUnmasking the MonsterThe revelation hit Audrey like a lightning bolt in the dark.

The pieces of a three-year-old nightmare finally clicked together in a terrifying, crystal-clear picture.
Arthur Vance hadn't just been an isolated abuser running a dark facility upstate. He was part of a lucrative, corrupt ring of medical professionals who accepted bribes from abusive guardians and illegal private adoption agencies to sign off on false medical evaluations, clearing unfit homes and covering up horrific injuries.
He was the reason Hannah Price had been sent back to her stepfather.
He was the architect of the lie that had destroyed Audrey’s career and broken her spirit.
"He covered his tracks back then," Audrey said into the phone, her voice cold and steady as steel. "And now that Caleb Rowan spotted him in the hospital, he knows the police are going to dig up those old records. He’s destroying the physical archives before you can secure them."
"We have two units en route to the records building now," Cole said. "But the storm outside is slowing them down. The building is scheduled for demolition next month—it's practically abandoned at night."
Audrey looked across the room at Ben, who was holding baby Clara close to his chest. Her daughter was safe, sleeping peacefully under the watchful eye of hospital security.
"Detective," Audrey said firmly. "The physical archives for District 4 aren't kept in the main filing room on the ground floor. When I worked there, the high-priority sealed child-abuse records were kept in the basement vault behind the boiler room. If he doesn't know the layout, he's searching the wrong floor."
"Can you give me the exact access code for that vault?" Cole asked rapidly.
"The code was changed when the district merged," Audrey said. "The only people who know the master bypass are former senior caseworkers." She paused, her hazel eyes flashing with absolute determination. "I know the code."
Ten minutes later, despite Ben’s frantic pleas, Audrey was sitting in a wheelchair, fully dressed in her warm clothes, holding an ice pack to her abdomen.
"Audrey, you just had a C-section!" Ben cried out, holding Clara in his arms, his eyes wide with fear. "You can't go out there!"
"Ben, look at me," Audrey said, standing up slowly, supporting herself against the wheelchair. The pain in her surgical incision was intense, but it was nothing compared to the fire burning in her heart. "Vance destroyed Hannah Price’s life. He tried to destroy Caleb Rowan. He’s the reason I’ve lived in hell for three years. If I don't give the police what they need to put him away forever, he’ll do this to another child."
She reached out, touching her daughter’s tiny cheek with absolute tenderness. "I'm doing this for her, Ben. So she grows up in a world where monsters don't get to hide."
Ben looked into his wife’s eyes and saw no trace of the fragile, guilty woman who had entered the hospital twelve hours ago. Standing before him was a mother—unbroken, fierce, and unstoppable.
He leaned down and kissed her deeply. "Be safe. Come back to us."

"I will," she swore.
Five minutes later, Audrey was in the front seat of an unmarked police cruiser driven by Detective Cole, the siren wailing into the rain-soaked night as they sped toward the old County Administration Building.
