Chapter 3 - Poison in the Family Bloodline

News of the scandal spread through the Rowan family line like wildfire.

Evelyn Rowan was not just a wealthy matriarch; she was the central figure in a high-society social circle, a woman who prided herself on perfection, family legacy, and aristocratic poise. When rumors began to circulate that Caleb had barred his mother from the hospital, Evelyn initiated a vicious smear campaign among their extended relatives.

Two days after Hannah was moved out of the ICU and into a private recovery room, Caleb’s uncle, Richard Rowan—Evelyn’s older brother and the family trustee—arrived at the hospital.

He pushed open the door to Hannah’s room without knocking, his face flushed with indignation.

"Caleb!" Richard barked, ignoring Hannah, who was sitting up in bed, holding a warm cup of broth. "What is the meaning of this absurdity? Your mother is hysterical! She claims you slapped her in public and threatened her life!"

Caleb stood up from the armchair near the window, his commanding posture instantly cutting off his uncle’s bluster.

"Lower your voice, Uncle Richard," Caleb said coldly. "You are in a hospital room where my wife is recovering from emergency surgery."

"I don't care about the room!" Richard snapped, stepping closer. "You have dragging the family name through the dirt! The police were at Evelyn’s house yesterday! Do you have any idea how this looks to the board of Rowan Development? You need to call Detective Vance right now and withdraw these ridiculous allegations!"

"Ridiculous allegations?" Hannah’s voice, though soft, carried a razor-sharp edge.

Richard turned to look at her, sneering slightly. "Hannah, I know you’ve had a difficult pregnancy, but making false police reports about Evelyn deliberately trying to harm you—"

"Read this, Richard," Caleb interrupted, pulling a stapled document from his coat pocket and throwing it onto the foot of the bed.

Richard frowned, picking up the papers. "What is this?"

"It’s the forensic audit report of the Rowan Family Trust from the past eighteen months," Caleb explained calmly. "While you were busy letting Mother manage the estate accounts, she embezzled three hundred and fifty thousand dollars. She transferred it to offshore accounts to cover her personal gambling debts from her trips to Monaco."

Richard’s face went pale. "Gambling debts? Evelyn doesn't—"

"She does," Caleb said. "And when Hannah found the accounting irregularities three weeks ago, Mother knew her time was up. So when Hannah went into placental abruption, Mother didn't just ignore her calls—she deliberately told her to stay on the floor and bleed to death so the audit would never be completed."

Richard stared at the financial papers in his hands, his eyes scanning the certified bank stamps, the forged signatures, and the offshore wire receipts. The color drained from his face until he looked as ghostly as the hospital walls.

"My God..." Richard whispered, dropping the papers onto the bed. "She... she forged my signature here too..."

"She betrayed all of us, Uncle," Caleb said, stepping up to his uncle and placing a heavy hand on his shoulder. "She didn't care about me. She didn't care about Hannah. And she certainly didn't care about her newborn granddaughter, who is currently lying in an incubator down the hall fighting for her breath."

Richard sank into a nearby chair, burying his face in his hands. "I... I believed her, Caleb. She called me crying, saying Hannah was trying to destroy the family..."

"The only person who destroyed this family is Evelyn," Hannah said softly from the bed, her eyes shining with quiet dignity. "We are moving forward, Richard. With or without the rest of the Rowan family."

Richard looked up, shame written across every line of his face. He looked at Hannah, then at Caleb, and slowly nodded. "I’ll call our corporate legal team. We’re freezing all her remaining assets today. She won't spend another dime of Rowan money to defend herself."

That evening, Caleb took Hannah down to the NICU in a wheelchair.

Through the clear glass of the incubator, they looked down at tiny Clara. She was wrapped in a tiny pink blanket, small wires attached to her chest, her little chest rising and falling in a steady, healthy rhythm. Her tiny fingers reached out, curling around Caleb’s pinky finger through the access port.

Caleb fell to his knees beside the wheelchair, resting his head against Hannah’s lap as they both held their daughter’s hand.

"She’s strong, Caleb," Hannah whispered, tears of joy streaming down her face. "She’s stronger than any of them."

"She gets it from her mother," Caleb replied softly, kissing Hannah’s bandaged hand. "She gets it all from you."
