Chapter 1 - The Call in the Dark

The phone screen flickered with a dying, erratic pulse against the slick asphalt of the alley. Blood from Chloe’s knuckles and the scrape on her temple smeared across the glass, but she kept her remaining fingers locked around the device.
“Speak.”
The voice on the other end of the line was a low, resonant baritone that cut straight through the deafening roar of the storm and the white-hot agony radiating from her left forearm. It was a voice that commanded obedience from boardrooms, back alleys, and underground syndicates alike.
Chloe choked on a wet, ragged sob, her voice trembling violently. “Can you pick me up?”
There was no hesitation. No questions. Just a single, lethal syllable.
“Stay where you are.”
The line clicked dead.
In the shadows of the dumpster, Derek stood frozen, his chest heaving as adrenaline and panic collided in his alcohol-addled brain. He stared at Chloe’s limp, unnatural arm, then down at his own trembling hands.
“I didn't mean to,” Derek stammered, backing away toward the mouth of the alley. “You made me do it, Chloe! You shouldn't have—you shouldn't have been talking to guys like that!”
He turned and bolted into the rain, disappearing into the Chicago night just as the low, menacing purr of a heavy V8 engine echoed down the side street.
A matte-black Maybach slid to a halt right at the mouth of the alley, blocking the exit. The doors opened with synchronized precision. Two towering enforcers in dark wool overcoats stepped out, scanning the gloom with practiced, predatory efficiency. Behind them stepped Silas Mercer.
He didn't run, but his stride covered ground with terrifying speed. His charcoal bespoke coat billowed slightly in the wind, and his dark eyes were fixed entirely on the crumpled figure in the mud.
Silas dropped to one knee beside her, completely ignoring the freezing puddles soaking his trousers. His gaze swept over her pale, tear-streaked face, the yellowing bruise on her jaw, and finally locked onto her shattered forearm. The air around him dropped ten degrees.
“Who did this?” Silas asked, his voice dangerously soft, carrying the weight of an impending execution.
“Derek,” Chloe whispered, her vision blurring as the shock finally took over. “Please... it hurts.”
Silas didn't waste a breath on words. He reached out with infinite care, his strong, calloused hands sliding beneath her shoulders and knees, lifting her effortlessly against his chest.
“I’ve got you,” he murmured, pressing her head gently against his shoulder.

Bruno, his primary enforcer, held the door of the Maybach open. “Boss, should we track down the rat?”
“Bring him to me,” Silas commanded, sliding into the leather-lined interior with Chloe cradled securely in his arms. “Slowly. Let him sweat.”
