Chapter 4 - The Legal Siege

By 8:00 AM, the command center inside the Vanguard Legal Clinic looked like an active military war room. I sat at the head of a long conference table, surrounded by three of the state’s top family law attorneys and an elite forensic accountant who had spent the last four hours dissecting Cole’s corporate tax returns.
Mara lay in the adjoining private lounge, resting under the watchful eye of a trusted obstetrician. The baby was safe, the heartbeat strong, but the medical report detailed severe psychological duress and a deep tissue bruise on her wrist from where Cole had pinned her down.
"We have filed the emergency ex-parte temporary restraining order," our lead attorney, Sarah Jenkins, announced, slamming a heavily stamped file onto the table. "The judge signed it twenty minutes ago. Cole Vanguard is legally barred from coming within 500 yards of Mara, your residence, or this clinic. Furthermore, the court has granted us temporary total custody of the unborn child."
"That’s just the first layer, Sarah," I said, sliding a digital tablet over to her. "What about the corporate assets?"
"The forensic audit is complete, Nora," the accountant reported, a satisfied smile breaking across his face. "We found the exact routing numbers for the $14.2 million harbor bond diversion. Cole was using a shell company registered under his mother's maiden name to fund his private real estate investments in Cabo. It’s an open-and-shut case of grand larceny against the city infrastructure."
I leaned back in my chair, the exhaustion of the night entirely replaced by a profound, clinical satisfaction. "File the corporate emergency freeze orders. I want every single bank card, credit line, and investment account associated with Cole Vanguard or Vanguard Capital frozen by noon. Let him see what it feels like to have his liquidity completely cut off."

The intercom on the desk buzzed. "Nora, Cole’s corporate defense team is on line one. They are offering an immediate, quiet settlement. They want to discuss a non-disclosure agreement."
I picked up the receiver, my voice steady and cold. "Tell them there will be no settlement. There will be no non-disclosure agreement. Tell Cole to save his breath for the grand jury arraignment on Thursday morning. The doors are locked, and I’ve already thrown away the key."
