Chapter 6 - The True FoundationThe morning sun filtered gently through the sheer lace curtains of the master suite, casting warm golden patterns across the hardwood floor.

Six months had passed since the charity gala. The scandal involving Vance Carter’s embezzlement had resulted in federal indictments and a complete restructuring of the corporate ethics board, firmly placing Jonathan in absolute control of the company’s moral and financial compass.
Downstairs, the estate was peaceful. Mrs. Higgins had retired, replaced by a head chef who treated every member of the domestic and maintenance staff with professional respect. The toxic echoes of the past had been systematically swept away, replaced by an atmosphere of genuine loyalty and mutual care.
In the master bedroom, Annie sat at the edge of the plush king-size bed, wearing an oversized cashmere sweater and comfortable denim jeans. Her bionic leg rested casually against the comforter as she typed a final assignment on her laptop for her advanced mechanical engineering final exam.
From behind her, strong arms wrapped around her waist, and a warm chin rested softly on her shoulder.
"Still working?" Jonathan murmured, pressing a gentle kiss against her neck. "It's Saturday morning. Even scholarship students are allowed to sleep in."
Annie smiled, leaning back against his chest and locking her laptop screen. "Just finishing my final project for my robotics design class. I was testing out a new conceptual joint mechanism—similar to the microprocessed tech in my own leg, but scaled down for lightweight industrial applications."
Jonathan chuckled, turning her around so she was facing him. He looked down into her dark, brilliant eyes with a gaze full of unyielding pride.
"You know," Jonathan said quietly, "when I came home early that morning to catch my staff off guard, I thought I was inspecting a house."
"And what did you find instead?" Annie asked, tilting her head with a playful spark in her eyes.
"I found a home," Jonathan answered, his voice dropping into a deep, tender register. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet jeweler's box, flipping it open to reveal a stunning, vintage diamond ring that caught the morning light.
Annie’s breath caught in her throat.
"I didn't hire a maid six months ago," Jonathan said, taking her hand in his. "And I didn't save an employee. I found the only person in this world who could look at a broken piece of machinery, smile through the pain, and find a way to fix it."
He looked up, his gray eyes searching hers with complete vulnerability.
"Annie Carter... will you stay in this house, and in my life, not as staff, not as a guest, but as my equal, my partner, and my wife?"
Tears of pure, overwhelming joy spilled over Annie’s lashes. She didn't hesitate. She threw her arms around his neck, burying her face against his shoulder, and whispered the only word that mattered.
"Yes."

Downstairs, through the open windows of the estate, the morning breeze rustled the ancient trees of Briar Glen. The limestone walls of the mansion no longer felt like a cold fortress of inherited power; they felt warm, vibrant, and alive.
The audit was over. The flaws had been corrected. And the true foundation of the Graves estate had finally been built to last forever.
