Chapter 4 - The Fortress

Logan didn't waste a single second.

While Mira rested in the guest room under Eli’s watchful, protective eye, Logan walked out into the dark backyard with a flashlight and a spade. Within fifteen minutes, his spade hit solid metal beneath the roots of the ancient oak tree.

He pulled up a small, rusted steel tackle box. Inside, wrapped in three layers of vacuum-sealed plastic, was a matte-black SanDisk 256GB encrypted flash drive, along with Mira’s original clinical audit journals detailing trial patient fatalities and forged laboratory logs.

Logan brought the drive upstairs to his private office, locking the heavy oak door behind him. He plugged the drive into his air-gapped, isolated workstation.

The files were staggering.

Page after page of internal emails between Vanguard Bio-Pharmaceuticals CEO Julian Vance, Dr. Arthur Sterling, and senior regulatory lobbyists. The documents proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that Vanguard had intentionally concealed fatal cardiac and neurological side effects of their flagship military combat drug, Neurolink-9, in order to secure a $450 million Department of Defense procurement contract.

More chillingly, Logan found a sub-folder labeled CLEANUP PROTOCOLS.

Inside were wire-transfer logs totaling $200,000 paid to a private security firm owned by Marcus Vance—the very funds used to orchestrate Mira’s "accident" on the Catawba River bridge.

At 2:00 AM, Logan’s secure satellite phone rang. He picked it up immediately.

"Logan," a deep, commanding voice answered over the line. It was Special Agent-in-Charge Raymond Vance (no relation to Julian Vance), a veteran federal investigator with the FBI’s Public Corruption and Healthcare Fraud Division, and a lifelong friend of Logan’s late father.

"Uncle Raymond," Logan said, keeping his voice quiet. "I have the drive. And I have Mira."

A heavy, stunned silence fell over the federal line.

"...Mira is alive?" Raymond asked softly.

"She’s sitting in my living room," Logan confirmed. "She’s been living on the streets for three years to keep Eli and me from being executed by Julian Vance’s hit squad. They spotted her in downtown Charlotte today. They know she’s back."

"Listen to me very carefully, Logan," Agent Raymond Vance ordered, his voice turning into pure steel. "Julian Vance is scheduled to sign the final $450 million Department of Defense contract tomorrow morning at ten o'clock at the Grand Charlotte Convention Center. High-ranking military officials and news outlets from across the country will be in that ballroom."

"He can't sign that contract, Raymond," Logan declared. "This drug will kill soldiers."

"If Julian Vance realizes Mira has surfaced with that drive, he will burn that convention center to the ground to destroy the evidence," Raymond warned. "I am deploying a tactical federal protection detail to your house right now. Secure your perimeter. Tomorrow morning, we execute a full federal takedown."

"No," Logan interrupted, staring at the glowing monitor screen. "Don't send the tactical team to my house. Julian’s men are likely watching the road already. If they see federal vehicles, they’ll run or destroy their internal corporate servers before we can seize them."

"What are you proposing, Logan?"

Logan looked at the photograph sitting on his desk—a photo of Mira and four-year-old Eli laughing on a sunny beach five years ago.

"I’m going to walk right into Julian Vance’s press conference," Logan said cold. "And Mira is going to deliver the verdict herself."
