Chapter 4 - THE CONFESSION IN THE CLOUDThe blood drained from Julian Sterling’s face so fast he looked like a corpse standing in a tailored suit. The arrogant, untouchable billionaire veneer cracked down the middle, revealing the panic-stricken coward hiding beneath the designer fabric.

"That... that's a bluff," Sterling stammered, taking an involuntary half-step backward, his eyes darting toward the open balcony doors as if contemplating a leap into the Nashville night air. "You're bluffing, Mercer. You don't have a live feed. My tech team scrubbed your phone three weeks ago!"
"Your tech team is brilliant at corporate espionage, Julian. Not so great at intercepting decentralized satellite uplinks," Marcus Vance said, stepping forward with a pair of steel handcuffs clicking menacingly in his palm. He grabbed Sterling by the expensive silk lapel of his jacket and spun him around, slamming his wrists hard against his lower back. "You have the right to remain silent, you arrogant prick. Anything you say can and will be used to bury you under a federal prison for the rest of your natural life."
"Get your hands off me! Do you know who I am?!" Sterling shrieked, thrashing uselessly against Marcus’s iron grip as the steel cuffs clicked shut around his wrists. "My lawyers will own this city before sunrise! You can't touch me!"
"Oh, we can touch you, Mr. Sterling," a calm, authoritative voice echoed from the doorway of the penthouse suite.
State Attorney General Elena Vance (no relation to Marcus) stepped into the room, flanked by two armed federal marshals and a digital forensics technician carrying a heavy-duty data extraction rig. She held up a small black tablet displaying a live audio-visual wave form scrolling rapidly across the screen.
"We’ve been recording every word of your conversation since the moment we mirrored Mr. Mercer’s cloud drive downstairs in the lobby," the Attorney General stated crisply, flashing her badge. "Conspiracy to commit kidnapping, interstate extortion, child endangerment, and corporate racketeering. That’s a minimum of forty federal years, Mr. Sterling. Say goodbye to your golf club membership."
As the federal marshals dragged a howling, cursing Julian Sterling toward the elevator, Rowan turned his attention back to the corner of the room.
Delaney was huddled on the floor, her knees pulled up to her chest, sobbing uncontrollably into her hands. The designer makeup was completely ruined, her facade of suburban perfection reduced to ash and rubble.
"Rowan... please," she whimpered, looking up at him with tear-filled, desperate eyes. "I didn't want them to hurt the kids! Sterling threatened me! He said if I didn't cooperate with the custody diversion scheme, he would expose my gambling debts and take full custody away from me forever!"
Rowan looked down at the woman he had once loved, the mother of his children. There was no anger left in him—only a cold, vast emptiness.
"You left them to starve in the dark, Delaney," Rowan said, his voice entirely flat. "You didn't just fail as a mother; you sold your own flesh and blood to a monster for a handful of silver. When the judge reads your indictment tomorrow morning, you won't just lose custody. You’ll lose your parental rights permanently."
Delaney let out a piercing, animalistic wriek of pure agony, collapsing forward onto the Persian rug as Marcus Vance stepped in to read her her rights and snap the cuffs around her wrists.
Rowan turned his back on the wreckage of the penthouse, pulled his phone from his pocket, and speed-dialed Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital.
The phone picked up on the second ring.
"Pediatric ICU, nurse speaking," a calm voice answered.
"This is Rowan Mercer," he said, his breath hitching as a wave of overwhelming emotion finally broke through his iron control. "I’m coming back. How is Elsie?"
May you like
"Mr. Mercer, you need to get down here right now," the nurse said, her voice laced with a sudden, urgent warmth. "She just woke up. She opened her eyes, and she’s asking for her big brother."
Rowan didn't say another word. He hung up the phone, turned on his heel, and sprinted out of the penthouse, leaving the luxury, the corporate war, and the monsters far behind.
