Chapter 3 - The Ghost FacilityThe rain had turned into a relentless, icy drizzle by the time the convoy of three unmarked cruisers and a county tactical van turned off Highway 12 onto an unpaved logging road.

According to the property records pulled by state investigators twenty minutes earlier, the address tied to Vance-Carter Bio-Research was supposed to be a decommissioned timber mill. But as the vehicles crept through the dense canopy of Douglas firs, the rusted corrugated metal structure didn't look abandoned at all.

Bright, halogen security lights cut through the mist, illuminating an electrified perimeter fence topped with razor wire.

Daniel sat in the passenger seat of the lead cruiser, his tactical vest feeling heavy and restrictive across his chest. His fingers rested on the barrel of his department-issue patrol rifle.

“Federal magistrate just signed off on the no-knock search and seizure warrant,” Captain Vance announced over the encrypted radio channel. “State police are securing the perimeter. If anyone is inside that facility, they are likely working under illicit chemical manufacturing protocols. Watch your corners. We don't know what kind of aerosol agents or chemical containment breaches we’re dealing with.”

The cruiser stopped fifty yards from the main entrance of the facility—a massive, windowless warehouse built directly into the side of a limestone cliff.

The tactical team deployed in a silent, practiced choreography. Two officers moved to the rear emergency exits with breaching tools, while the lead element formed up outside the reinforced steel double doors at the front.

“Breach! Breach! Breach!”

A hydraulic battering ram slammed against the deadbolts. With a deafening metallic shriek, the heavy doors buckled inward, crashing onto the concrete floor inside.

“Police! Nobody move!”

Daniel flooded through the opening right behind the shield operator, his rifle raised, scanning the vast, dimly lit interior.

The room took his breath away, but not for the reasons he expected.

It wasn't a meth lab. It wasn't even a standard illicit drug manufacturing operation. It looked like a cross between a high-tech pediatric clinic and a sterile underground nursery.

Rows of automated infant incubators lined the left wall, glowing with blue LED control panels. Along the right wall were dozens of clinical observation stations, each equipped with computer monitors, biometric tracking sensors, and automated IV drip lines.

And sitting on a metal examination table in the center of the room was a rack of identical glass vials, labeled with handwritten index numbers and children’s names.

Subject 04 - Olivia Carter. Subject 05 - Emma Carter. Subject 06 through 12.

Daniel lowered his rifle slightly, his stomach churning. There weren't just two children tied to this facility. There were a dozen.

“Clear!” shouted a tactical officer from the back office. “No active combatants, but we’ve got secure server racks downloading data automatically, and... Captain, you need to see this.”

Daniel followed Captain Vance through a sliding glass partition into what appeared to be Michael Carter’s private office.

The walls were covered in whiteboards, diagrams, and medical charts detailing genetic lineages, neurological suppression thresholds, and hormonal regulation trials. But right in the center of the main desk sat an open laptop, its screen displaying an active video conference window with a timestamp from three hours earlier.

The video was paused on a frozen frame of an older man with silver hair and cold, aristocratic eyes, speaking to Michael from a high-rise office in Seattle.

Vance stepped closer to the screen, his face draining of color.

“Good God,” Vance whispered.

“Do you know him, Captain?” Daniel asked, stepping up beside him.

“That’s Julian Vance,” Vance said, his voice tight and hollow. “Head of Vance Pharmaceuticals. One of the largest medical research conglomerates on the West Coast.”

Daniel stared at the frozen image of the billionaire industrialist. “What does a pharmaceutical billionaire have to do with an underground child sedation lab in rural Oregon?”

Before Vance could answer, the laptop screen flickered. A new text log popped up in the chat window beneath the paused video call, auto-refreshing from a secure remote server.

TRANSACTION COMPLETE: BATCH 04 DISPENSED. SUBJECTS COMPLIANT. PREPARING FOR PHASE TWO EXTRACTION.

Daniel’s blood turned to ice.

Phase two.

They weren't just running illegal drug trials on children. They were preparing to move them somewhere else before the authorities could piece the entire network together.

And Emma and Olivia weren't runaway kids from a broken home. They were test subjects who had broken out of the cage.
