Chapter 6 - A New DawnSix months after the trial concluded, the city of New York felt vibrant, alive, and completely unburdened.

My new office was located in a sunlit brownstone in downtown Manhattan. The walls were lined with books, case files, and diplomas, but the most important feature was hidden away in a secure digital vault—a reminder of the tools that had saved my life.
On a bright Saturday afternoon, I sat at my mahogany desk, reviewing a case file for a client who needed help escaping a dangerous, controlling marriage.
The intercom on my desk buzzed gently.
“Evelyn,” my assistant’s voice came through. “Detective Rourke is here to see you. He brought coffee and pastries.”
“Send him in,” I smiled.
Damon walked through the office door carrying a white pastry box and two coffees, wearing a relaxed smile that contrasted sharply with the grim tension of our first meetings.
“Breakfast delivery for the boss,” Damon said, placing the box on my desk.
“You didn't have to, Damon, but I’m definitely not complaining,” I said, opening the box to reveal fresh croissants.
We sat across from each other, sharing coffee and discussing the upcoming cases for the week. There was no fear in the room, no suspicion, no hidden poison, and no cameras watching for danger. Just two people who understood the darkest parts of human nature, yet chose to build something good out of the wreckage.
As I looked out the large window at the bustling New York street below, I realized that the nightmare on the Hudson River was nothing more than a closed chapter in a very long book.
