Part 3: The Arrival of the Law

The sound of the front door splintering open didn't arrive with a warning. It came like a thunderclap, a sudden, violent intrusion of the outside world into the suffocating silence of the Varrick mansion.

"State Police! Nobody move!"

The roar echoed down the long marble hallway, accompanied by the heavy, rapid thud of tactical boots.

Cordelia snapped upright, the porcelain teapot slipping from her fingers and shattering against the floorboards, splashing the remaining hot tea across the rug. Adrian spun around, his face instantly draining of whatever color it had left.

"What... what is this?" Cordelia demanded, her voice rising in pitch, trying to summon the aristocratic authority that had shielded her for seventy years. "How dare you break into my home! Do you know who I am?"

"Get on the ground! Now!"

Detective Miller burst through the dining room archway, his service weapon drawn and steady. Behind him were four uniformed officers, their tactical lights cutting through the dim, elegant lighting of the room. Miller didn't look at Cordelia. His eyes locked onto me, sprawling on the floor, my face swollen, my breathing down to a desperate, occasional gasp.

"Medic! Now!" Miller shouted over his shoulder, holstering his weapon in a single fluid motion as he dropped to his knees beside me. He didn't hesitate. He tore open his tactical vest, pulling out an auto-injector he had carried from the precinct the moment the live feed began to broadcast the dinner conversation.

He slammed the epinephrine into my outer thigh.

The medicine flooded my system like a lightning strike. My heart, which had been slowing to a terminal crawl, violently restarted, pumping a desperate surge of adrenaline through my frozen veins. My lungs opened with a sharp, ragged gasp, pulling in a massive draft of oxygen that felt like fire but meant life.

"I’ve got you, Counselor," Miller whispered, his hand steady against my shoulder. "I’ve got you. Just breathe."

Across the room, two officers had Adrian pinned against the mahogany sideboard, his arms forced behind his back as the handcuffs clicked into place. He was weeping openly, his forehead pressed against the wood.

"It was her," Adrian sobbed, his voice cracking completely. "It was my mother's idea. She made the sauce. She told me to wait. I didn't want to do it, I swear to God I didn't want to do it!"

"Adrian, shut your miserable mouth!" Cordelia hissed. Even with an officer forcing her wrists into steel restraints, she remained rigid, her eyes flashing with a venomous, unyielding pride. "This is a misunderstanding. A medical emergency. My son is under extreme duress, and this... this woman had an accidental reaction to the catering."

Miller stood up slowly, turning to look at Cordelia Varrick. He pulled a small, encrypted tablet from his pocket and held it up, facing her. On the screen, a perfect, high-definition recording of the last ten minutes was playing in a continuous loop. Her voice, crisp and clear, filled the room: "Die quietly, Maren."

"The grand jury isn't going to need to interpret the catering, Mrs. Varrick," Miller said coldly. "We've been streaming you in 4K since the salad course."
