Chapter 5 - The Ashes of the PastTwo weeks after the night at the docks, the city was quiet.

The news of the Moretti family’s collapse had sent shockwaves through the underworld. Dominic Moretti was currently sitting in a federal holding cell facing twenty life sentences without parole. Isabella had fled to Europe, her social standing destroyed, her family’s fortune seized by federal marshals and Vance corporate attorneys.

The Vance territory had been officially reclaimed.

On a bright, crisp autumn morning, a long convoy of black SUVs pulled up to the gates of the old Vance estate in Westchester.

The main house had been rebuilt—not as a dark, fortified bunker, but as a grand, glass-and-stone mansion surrounded by rolling green lawns, blooming rose gardens, and towering oak trees.

I stepped out of the lead vehicle, wearing a tailored cream-colored coat and dark sunglasses.

Declan stepped out beside me, taking my hand in his. His left hand was still lightly bandaged from the blade cut, but he held my fingers with absolute strength.

We walked up the wide marble steps toward the front entrance.

Standing at the doors were dozens of old servants, former Vance capos, and loyal family associates who had gone into hiding four years ago. As I approached, they all bowed their heads in deep, genuine respect.

“Welcome home, Miss Clara,” an old gardener wept softly, pressing a fresh red rose into my hands.

Tears welled in my eyes, but I held my head high, smiling warmly at the people who had loved my father.

“Thank you, Thomas,” I said softly. “It’s good to be home.”

Declan guided me inside the grand foyer. The high ceilings were filled with light streaming through massive arched windows. On the main wall above the stone fireplace hung a massive, restored oil painting of my father, Arthur Vance, smiling proudly in his suit.

I walked over to the fireplace, staring up at my father’s face.

“We did it, Dad,” I whispered, touching the thin silver ring on my finger. “Your legacy is safe.”

Declan walked up beside me, placing his arm around my waist, pulling me close against his side.

“He would be immensely proud of you, Clara,” Declan said quietly. “You didn't just survive. You conquered.”

I turned in his arms, resting my hands on his broad chest, looking up at his handsome, rugged face.

“I couldn't have done it without you, Declan,” I admitted softly. “Four years ago, I thought you were my enemy. I wasted so much time hating you.”

Declan smiled, leaning down to press a soft kiss against my forehead. “You didn't waste time, my love. You grew strong. And when the timing was right, fate brought you back to my table.”

“Even if I had to break a glass first,” I teased, a soft laugh escaping my lips.

“Breaking that glass was the best thing that ever happened to me,” Declan chuckled, wrapping his arms securely around my waist.

That evening, the grand dining room of the Vance estate was filled with light, laughter, and music.

A small, private dinner was held for our closest allies. Marco was there, laughing with Mrs. Gable over a bottle of vintage wine. Loyal captains sat at the long table, raising their glasses in toasts to the newly united Vance-Rossi alliance.

I sat at the head of the table, wearing a simple, elegant sapphire-blue dress that sparkled under the warm light of the chandeliers.

Declan sat beside me, his hand resting casually over mine on the white linen tablecloth.

He tapped his glass with a silver fork, standing up to address the room.

The laughter died down as everyone turned their attention to the dark prince of New York.

“Four years ago, this house fell into darkness,” Declan spoke, his voice deep, strong, and echoing through the grand room. “Many believed the Vance family was gone forever. But true strength isn't born in comfort. It’s forged in the fire.”

He looked down at me, his dark eyes shining with an intense, unshakeable devotion that made my heart leap in my chest.

“My wife survived the fire,” Declan continued, raising his glass high. “She fought through the darkness, took back her crown, and made this city remember who we are. To Clara Vance-Rossi—the Queen of New York!”

The entire room stood up in unison, raising their glasses high into the air, their voices echoing in a booming chorus:

“To the Queen!”

I smiled, my heart overflowing with an incredible, overwhelming sense of peace. I reached up, took Declan’s hand, and pulled him down for a sweet, lingering kiss as the room erupted into cheers.
