Chapter 6 - A New Dawn in Edgewater

One year after the morning that changed everything, the Edgewater apartment looked entirely different.

The dark, heavy drapes Derek had insisted on buying were gone, replaced by light, billowing sheer white curtains that allowed the golden Miami sunlight to flood every corner of the living room. The walls had been repainted in a soothing, crisp Scandinavian white, adorned with vibrant abstract art Skylar had chosen herself.

It was a Saturday morning in late spring.

A gentle, salt-scented breeze drifted in from the private balcony overlooking Biscayne Bay. Below, the water sparkled like shattered diamonds under the morning sun.

Skylar stood in her newly renovated kitchen, wearing a comfortable silk robe, holding a steaming ceramic mug of freshly brewed coffee. She took a slow sip, letting the rich, aromatic flavor warm her chest.

No fear. No tension. No waiting for someone to scream, or demand, or throw something. Just absolute, unbreakable peace.

Her logistics firm had recently promoted her to Vice President of Regional Operations, rewarding her years of relentless dedication with a corner office and a seat on the executive board. Her bank accounts were secure, her real estate holdings were untouchable, and her heart had healed, leaving behind only the hard, polished strength of a woman who knew her own worth.

A soft knock sounded at her front door, followed by the quiet click of a key turning in the lock.

Julian, a brilliant maritime architect she had met during a port-expansion project six months earlier—a man who valued her independence, listened to her thoughts, and brought her coffee in bed just to watch her smile—walked into the kitchen carrying two bags of fresh pastries from the French bakery down the street.

“Morning, beautiful,” Julian smiled, walking up behind her, wrapping his arms gently around her waist, and resting his chin on her shoulder. He looked out at the magnificent view of the bay. “How’s the view from the top today?”

Skylar leaned back against his chest, her hands resting over his. She smiled, looking down at the unblemished skin of her left cheek, where the burn had long since vanished, leaving behind only a radiant, confident glow.

“The view,” Skylar said softly, taking another sip of her coffee, “is absolutely perfect.”
