Chapter 3 - The House on Lincoln Park

The temperature in the Lincoln Park kitchen had dropped as the afternoon rain began to beat a steady, rhythmic tattoo against the leaded-glass windows.

The front door clicked open at 5:30 PM, the sound of loud, triumphant laughter echoing through the walnut-paneled hallway before the boots even hit the rug. Daniel walked in first, his expensive Italian leather jacket damp from the mist, his arm draped casually over his sister’s shoulders. Vanessa was carrying a high-end shopping bag from a boutique on Michigan Avenue, her face illuminated by the glow of her phone screen as she checked her real estate updates.

"I’m telling you, Van, she’s probably still sitting in the ER waiting room trying to figure out how to explain the mark to the nurses," Daniel chuckled, tossing his car keys onto the entryway table with a sharp, metallic clatter. "Claire is all talk. She gets that quiet, stubborn look from her dad, but when things get loud, she always folds. By tomorrow morning, she’ll hand over the card just to keep the peace."

"She better," Vanessa scoffed, walking into the kitchen and dropping her shopping bags onto the floor. "The landlord for the Gold Coast salon space said if the verification wire doesn't clear by tomorrow at noon, he’s giving the lease to that nail clinic from River North. I’m not losing that location because your wife wants to act like a martyr over a few grand."

Daniel walked up to the kitchen island, his eyes scanning the counter for the bottle of vintage bourbon he usually kept near the wine rack. "Don't worry about it. I’ll make sure she signs the security release tonight. If she gives me any grief, I’ll just remind her that the house is in my name—or at least, she thinks it is."

He stopped mid-sentence.

His eyes fell on the white granite counter.

The porcelain coffee mug sat exactly where he had left it, the dark, dried stain beneath it looking like an old bruise against the stone. But directly next to the handle lay the three-carat platinum diamond band, its stones catching the gray light from the window with a cold, mocking brilliance. Beside the ring lay the heavy, blue-bound folder, the gold seal of the Cook County Circuit Court gleaming against the dark cardstock.

Vanessa noticed his silence and stepped closer, her smirk fading as she looked at his face. "Daniel? What is that?"

Daniel didn't answer. His hand shook slightly as he reached out, his fingers hooking around the edge of the blue folder. He pulled it open, his eyes scanning the first page with a frantic, disorganized speed.

EMERGENCY ORDER OF PROTECTION – CASE NO. 2026-DOM-4412

PETITIONER: CLAIRE STERLING

RESPONDENT: DANIEL VANCE

"What the hell is this?" Daniel muttered, his voice dropping an octave, the confident, masculine resonance completely vanishing. "She... she used her maiden name."

"Look at the second page," Vanessa whispered, her hand rising to her mouth as she read over his shoulder.

NOTICE OF IMMEDIATE ADMINISTRATIVE SUSPENSION AND ASSET FREEZE – STERLING LENDING GROUP LLC.

By order of the Board of Directors and the Majority Shareholder, Claire Sterling, all corporate authority, clearing privileges, and compensation structures for Daniel Vance are hereby terminated effective 15:00 hours.

"Majority shareholder?" Vanessa gasped, her voice cracking into a high, panicked register. "Daniel, you told me she just had a creative design trust! You said you were the one running the firm! You said you had the vice president’s seat!"

"I am the vice president!" Daniel roared, slamming his fist against the granite counter so hard the porcelain mug rattled against the stone. "She can't do this! Her father left the company to the family trust! I’m part of the family!"

Before he could turn the page, the screen of his phone on the counter lit up, vibrating violently against the stone. The caller ID displayed the name Marcus Vance – SLG Forensic Accounting.

Daniel tore the phone off the counter, pressing it to his ear with an aggressive, defensive grunt. "Marcus! What the fuck is going on with the clearing server? I just tried to log into the terminal from my mobile app and it’s showing a Code 9 restriction!"

"Mr. Vance," the voice on the other end was entirely detached, carrying the cold finality of an executioner reading a warrant. "I’m calling to advise you that your corporate digital profile has been permanently decommissioned. The forty-thousand-dollar wire transfer to Vance Beauty Logistics has been flagged as a fraudulent transaction and has been recalled by the clearing bank. Furthermore, Special Agents from the Illinois Department of Financial Regulation are currently executing a data-preservation warrant at our main office. I strongly suggest you retain independent criminal counsel."

"Marcus, wait!" Daniel shouted, a bead of cold sweat breaking out along his hairline. "It was an internal allocation! My wife authorized—"

"Your wife is currently sitting in my office with the state’s attorney, Mr. Vance," Marcus said calmly. "And she has the coffee stains to prove exactly how the authorization was handled. Do not call this number again."

The line went dead.

Daniel stared at the phone screen, his face turning a pale, mottled gray that matched the winter sky outside. He looked up at Vanessa, whose expression of high-society arrogance had entirely collapsed into the raw, naked terror of a con artist who had just realized the exit doors were locked from the outside.

"Daniel," she whispered, her fingers clutching his damp leather sleeve. "The lease... the money... what did you do?"

Daniel didn't answer her. He looked back down at the wedding ring sitting next to the empty mug. For the first time in his life, the silence of the house didn't feel like luxury. It felt like a trap that was slowly closing around his neck.
