Chapter 5 - The UnravelingThe preliminary hearing stretched into a grueling three-day battle, but the defense's strategy began to completely disintegrate under the sheer weight of forensic truth and digital evidence.

On the third afternoon, Prosecutor Torres called Detective Valeria Rios to the stand.
The detective presented the official state forensic report. The lab results were indisputable: Lorena’s fingerprints were embedded into the grease layers on the handle of the cast-iron pan, matching the angle of a high-velocity downward throw. Sofía’s skin cells and DNA were recovered directly from the burnt rim. Furthermore, the state digital forensics unit had restored deleted system files from Alicia Doyle’s phone, proving that she had sent multiple frantic messages to her husband, Raúl, ordering him to pay off the domestic housekeepers to lie to the police.
When Prosecutor Torres read those deleted messages aloud in court, Raúl Doyle lowered his head into his hands on the gallery bench, realizing his corporate reputation and legacy were completely ruined.
Judge Alarcon didn't even deliberate for twenty minutes before delivering her ruling.
“This court finds overwhelming probable cause,” Judge Alarcon declared, her voice ringing like a bell through the silent courtroom. “The defendant, Lorena Doyle, will remain remanded in custody without bail to stand trial for aggravated child abuse, assault with a deadly weapon, and domestic violence. The defendant, Alicia Doyle, will have her bail immediately revoked and be taken into custody for conspiracy to commit child abuse and felony tampering with physical evidence.”
CLICK-CLACK!
The courtroom bailiffs immediately stepped behind Alicia, pulling her hands behind her back and snapping heavy steel handcuffs around her wrists.
Alicia’s arrogant composure finally shattered into absolute, pathetic terror.
“Raúl! Do something!” Alicia screamed, struggling against the guards as they pulled her up from the defense table. “Raúl! Call the governor! Call the lawyers! Julia, tell them to stop! Tell them you made a mistake!”
Julia stood at the prosecution table, holding her head high, watching in complete silence as her mother and sister were led away through the side doors in chains, their cries echoing down the cold stone hallway until the heavy doors swung shut.
Raúl Doyle walked slowly across the aisle toward Julia.
He looked ten years older. His expensive designer suit looked baggy on his frame, his hair disheveled, his eyes empty and broken.
“Julia...” Raúl whispered, his voice trembling violently. “You’ve destroyed our family. Your mother... your sister... they’re going to prison.”
Julia looked at her father—the man who had stood by quietly, wiping up spilled juice, while his four-year-old granddaughter lay unconscious and bleeding on the floor.

“No, Papa,” Julia said softly, feeling no anger left in her chest, only a profound, liberating peace. “You destroyed this family a long time ago when you allowed them to treat people like trash. I just finally cleaned up the mess.”
She turned her back on him, walked out of the courtroom doors, and stepped into the warm afternoon sunshine of Guadalajara.
