Chapter 5 - Reclaiming the Foundation

Six months after the court hearing.

The grand opening of the Reyes Community Housing & Family Support Center was held on a bright, crisp spring morning in downtown Brooklyn.

Where my parents' fraudulent real estate firm once stood, a brand-new three-story community center now rose in its place. Using the recovered assets from the liquidations of their seized properties—along with the tech equity my mentor had left me—Mateo and I had purchased the building at a court auction and transformed it into a non-profit haven for victims of domestic abuse and financial exploitation.

A crowd of local residents, news crews, and community leaders gathered in the courtyard, surrounding a newly planted oak tree at the center of the lawn.

I stood on the podium wearing a white blazer, holding seven-month-old Leo in my arms. He was giggling, his little hands reaching out to grab at the microphone wire as Mateo stood beside us, his arm wrapped around my waist.

"Thank you all for coming today," I said into the microphone, my voice echoing warmly across the gathered crowd. "For a long time, I believed that family was something you were born into—something you had to endure, no matter how much pain or destruction it brought into your life."

I looked down at Leo, who offered me a big, toothless grin.

"But surviving the worst day of my life taught me something crucial," I continued. "Family isn't built on blood, control, or obligation. Family is built on protection. It’s built on the choices we make every single day to lift each other up rather than tear each other down."

The crowd applauded warmly, several women in the front row wiping tears from their eyes.

Among the crowd stood Detective Ross, wearing a sharp suit, clapping proudly alongside our neighbors who had rushed to help us on the day of the baby shower.

After cutting the ceremonial ribbon, Mateo and I walked into the main lobby of the center.

Mounted on the central brick wall, encased in a beautiful display frame behind safety glass, was the silver catering tray. It was polished to a mirror shine, its dented surface reflecting the bright light streaming through the entryway. Beneath it, a brass plaque read:

“WHAT WAS MEANT TO BREAK US BECAME OUR SHIELD. DEDICATED TO EVERY SURVIVOR WHO STOOD THEIR GROUND.”

"It looks good up there," Mateo said softly, leaning down to rest his chin on my uninjured shoulder.

"It belongs there," I smiled, holding Leo close to my heart. "It’s a reminder that no matter how hard they try to burn you, you can always build something unbreakable from the ashes."
