PART 5 — The Husband’s Return

"Mom. Brianna."

Ryan's voice came through the laptop speakers, low, vibrating with a rage so profound it made the room shake. The two women froze, staring at the screen as if looking at a ghost.

"Ryan... Ryan, sweetheart, listen to me," Patricia whimpered, her voice cracking as she tried to lean toward the camera. "Clara is framing us! She's been planning this to take your money! She staged the whole thing—"

"Shut your mouth," Ryan roared, slamming his hand onto the table in Singapore so hard the microphone clipped. "I watched the live cloud feed from the airport terminal in Tokyo during my layover, Mother. I watched my sister strike my pregnant wife. I heard you call my unborn children bastards on a recorded audio line. You left them to die locked in a dark house."

"Ryan, please, I'm your sister!" Brianna sobbed, her expensive makeup running down her face. "I just wanted to start my business! Clara was being greedy with the trust!"

"You are no sister of mine," Ryan said, his voice dropping into a terrifyingly cold calm. "As of five minutes ago, I have officially resigned from the Singapore expansion project. My replacement flight lands in two hours. I have already instructed our corporate legal team to freeze every single asset associated with the Brooks family estate. Mother, the townhouse you live in? It's under my corporate name. You have twenty-four hours to vacate before my security team removes your belongings. Brianna, the car you drive? The insurance? Canceled."

"You can't do that! I'm your mother!" Patricia screamed as Detective Vance began pulling her toward the door. "I raised you! You're throwing away your family for this... this accountant?!"

"Clara is my family," Ryan said, looking past them directly at me, his eyes softening into absolute devotion. "She and my twins are my only family. You two are just criminals. Take them away, Officer."

The hallway echoed with Patricia’s shrill curses and Brianna’s hysterical weeping as the police dragged them out of the ICU wing. The heavy door clicked shut once more, returning the room to a peaceful, sacred quiet.

Marcus stepped up, gently squeezing my foot through the blanket. "I'm going to head down to the NICU and wait for Ryan's arrival, Clara. The doctors said you need to rest your heart rate."

"Thank you, Marcus," I whispered, tears of exhaustion blurring my vision. "You saved our lives."

"We're neighbors, Clara. It's what we do," he smiled warmly before slipping out with Evelyn.

Left alone in the quiet room, I looked back at the laptop screen. Ryan was already packing his briefcase on camera, his hands trembling but his face set with absolute determination.

"I'm coming home, Clara," he whispered, pressing his fingers against the camera lens on his end. "I'm so sorry I wasn't there to catch her fist. I'm so sorry I didn't see through their greed sooner."

"You're here now, Ryan," I replied, holding my flat stomach, feeling the deep, aching soreness of a body that had survived a war. "Our babies are waiting for you. Come protect us."
