Chapter 2 - The Morning After the SilenceSaturday morning in Paradise Valley began with a brilliant wash of amber light spilling across the limestone terrace. I woke up naturally, without the sound of Chloe’s shrill morning phone calls or Gwendolyn’s heavy footsteps pacing the hallway. I brewed a cup of fresh coffee, stepped out onto the wide back porch, and breathed in the cool desert morning.

Back on Elm Street, however, the morning would be unfolding very differently.
At precisely 8:30 AM, my cell phone buzzed on the patio table. It was an incoming call from Samuel.
I let it ring out. The screen flickered dark, then lit up again a few seconds later. Second attempt. I watched the screen calmly, sipping my coffee. When it stopped, I dialed an outgoing number—not my father, but Arthur Vance, the senior partner at Vance & Sterling Trust Law.
“Good morning, Paige,” Arthur’s deep, measured voice came through the speaker. “I trust the hillside retreat is treating you well?”
“It’s incredible, Arthur,” I replied, leaning against the railing. “And the timing couldn’t be better. I’m ready to initiate the trust enforcement protocol regarding the Elm Street property.”
A dry chuckle came from the other end. “Ah. The twenty-fifth birthday clause has officially been triggered, and it sounds like our friends have given us the exact legal opening we needed.”
“They didn’t just give us an opening, Arthur. Gwendolyn formally ordered me to vacate the premises last night during dinner. She gave me twenty-four hours. We have witnesses—my father and my stepsister were sitting right there.”
“Magnificent,” Arthur said, the lawyerly satisfaction evident in his tone. “Under Section 4B of your late mother’s trust, any attempt by an unauthorized third party to evict the primary beneficiary, or failure by the secondary occupant—your father—to maintain a habitable and respectful environment, results in an immediate revocation of residency rights. In plain English, Gwendolyn has legally disqualified herself and your father from residing in the home. They are officially squatters as of midnight.”
“What’s our next move?” I asked.

“We serve them formal notice this afternoon,” Arthur replied smoothly. “Accompanied by a county sheriff’s deputy to ensure a seamless handover of the property keys. And Paige? Leave the logistics to me. You just enjoy your weekend. By Monday afternoon, that house will be entirely empty of their belongings.”
I thanked him and hung up. The satisfaction bubbling in my chest wasn't fueled by malice; it was the quiet validation of justice. For years, I had been treated like an intruder in my own home, forced to walk on eggshells to appease a woman who contributed nothing to the foundation of my life. Now, the reality check was hurtling toward Elm Street at Mach speed, and there was nothing Samuel or Gwendolyn could do to stop it.
