Chapter 3 - The Web of CorruptionFighting the DragonBy noon the next day, the story had broken across state news channels, though my name was kept anonymous under protective witness orders.

PROMINENT REAL ESTATE DEVELOPER LUKE VANCE ARRESTED ON ATTEMPTED MURDER AND DOMESTIC TORTURE CHARGES.
However, Luke’s money moved faster than the law.
Within six hours of his arrest, his wealthy family had secured the services of Richard Sterling—the most ruthless, expensive defense attorney in the state. By 4:00 PM, a judge with long-standing ties to Luke’s late father signed a high-bail release order.
Luke walked out of the county jail on a two-million-dollar bond, wearing a fresh suit, surrounded by a wall of lawyers and private security guards.
I was watching the news update from my hospital bed, my hand trembling as I held a cup of ice water.
"He's out," I whispered, the old terror clutching at my chest like an iron claw. "He's free."
"He isn't free, Caroline," Marcus said, stepping into the room with a stack of legal briefs. "He’s on strict electronic monitoring. He can't leave his county, and he has a zero-distance restraining order. If he steps within five hundred yards of this hospital, his ankle monitor alerts the State Police instantly."
"Restraining orders are just paper to him, Marcus!" I cried out, my voice cracking with desperation. "He doesn't care about rules! He thinks he’s God!"
"Then let him try," Evelyn said coldly, walking in behind Marcus carrying a fresh bouquet of yellow sunflowers, setting them on the window sill. "Let him step one inch out of line. The State Prosecutor is begging for a reason to revoke his bail."
Evelyn sat beside me, pulling a chair close. "Dr. Aris spoke with us an hour ago, Caroline. The internal burns on your liver and kidney lining are severe, but... they are treatable with specialized tissue therapy. You are going to heal. But you need to stay strong for the grand jury testimony next week."
"Grand jury?" I swallowed hard. "I have to stand in front of people and tell them?"
"You don't have to do it alone," Marcus assured me. "I will be in that room as your legal advocate. But Luke’s defense team is already leaking stories to the tabloids. They are trying to paint you as mentally ill. They claim you suffered from severe postpartum psychosis from your previous miscarriages and burned yourself to frame him."
I closed my eyes, my tears soaking into the fresh gauze around my neck. It was his favorite trick—taking the agony he inflicted on me and turning it into proof that I was crazy.
"They have the X-rays," I said softly, opening my eyes, my voice growing steady. "Dr. Aris has the proof that my pregnancies were viable sons... sons he beat out of me."
"Yes," Marcus nodded grimly. "And that is the one thing Richard Sterling cannot explain away. In this state, killing an unborn child through intentional assault carries the exact same sentence as first-degree murder. He is facing three life sentences without parole."
That evening, the hospital room went dim as the sun set over the city. Evelyn was fast asleep on the small cot beside my bed, exhausted from days of non-stop legal battles.
I lay awake, listening to the rhythmic beep of my heart monitor.
Suddenly, my bedside landline phone chimed quietly.
I froze. No one had this number except the nurse's station and Marcus.
Slowly, with trembling fingers, I reached out and picked up the receiver, pressing it to my ear without speaking.
Across the static, a familiar, smooth voice whispered into my ear:
"Did you really think your sister could protect you, Caroline?"
May you like
My blood turned to liquid ice.
"You belong to me," Luke’s voice hissed quietly, accompanied by the faint sound of ocean waves in the background—he was sitting on the balcony of his seaside mansion. "You can testify all you want. My lawyers own that courtroom. When this is over, I'm going to take you back home... and I'm going to finish what I started."
