Chapter 3 - The Shadows of the PastBy Thursday morning, the hospital was a pressure cooker.

District Attorney Arthur Vance had made good on his threat. Rumors had leaked to the local press—The City Chronicle ran a blistering front-page headline: MOB BOSS TURNED NICU NANNY: WHAT IS SEBASTIAN MORETTI HIDING?—complete with paparazzi staked out across the street from Pine Valley Children's Hospital, long-lens cameras pointed directly at the second-floor NICU windows.
Inside the unit, administration was in full panic mode. The hospital board had held an emergency conference call at 5:00 AM, debating whether to revoke Sebastian’s volunteer status to appease the DA's office.
I was at the central nursing station, reviewing medication charts, when Dante Moretti—Sebastian’s younger, sharper-dressed cousin and the Chief Operating Officer of Moretti Holdings—stroked into the unit with three corporate attorneys in tow.
Dante didn't look like a mob enforcer; he looked like a Wall Street shark who could ruin your life with a signature. He wore a bespoke charcoal suit, gold-rimmed glasses, and carried a leather briefcase that looked like it held tactical nuclear launch codes.
"Nurse Clara?" Dante asked, stopping at my desk.
"I'm Clara," I said, putting down my pen. "If you're here to cause a scene, security is already on standby."
Dante offered a thin, polished smile. "Relax, Nurse. We're not here to cause a scene. We're here to prevent one. Mr. Vance has filed an emergency injunction with Family Court trying to classify my cousin’s presence here as a 'public safety hazard.' Our legal team has already countered with a permanent restraining order against the DA's office for harassment of a registered hospital volunteer."
He dropped a thick, leather-bound folder onto the counter.
"What's that?" I asked.
"That is a complete petition for emergency temporary guardianship of Baby Boy Miller, filed under seal in the municipal court twenty minutes ago," Dante said smoothly. "Attached is a fully funded trust of five million dollars for his medical care, education, and security, alongside an ironclad adoption dossier signed by Sebastian."
I stared at the folder, my jaw slack. "He's adopting him? Just like that? Sebastian has known the baby for three days!"
"Sebastian has been waiting seventeen years for this moment, Clara," Dante said, his polished demeanor cracking just enough to reveal a raw, underlying family grief. "You don't understand. When our sister Elena lost her baby... when they took him away because we were poor, undocumented, and terrified kids from the docks... it broke him. He spent every dime he earned building an empire just so no one could ever take a child from our family again. This little boy... whether he's our blood or not... he's giving Sebastian a second chance to fix the unfixable."
I looked past Dante toward Bed Nine.
Sebastian was still there. He hadn't left the hospital since Monday night. He had slept sitting up in that green vinyl chair, refusing to go home, bathing and eating only when nurses forced him to take five-minute breaks. Right now, he was feeding the baby with a tiny specialized bottle, his large, calloused hands cradling the fragile infant with breathtaking precision.
The baby took the nipple eagerly, his tiny throat working in rhythmic swallows.
Sebastian’s face lit up with an expression of such pure, unadulterated joy that it transformed his entire appearance. For a second, the fearsome crime boss vanished entirely, leaving only a father looking at his child for the very first time.
Suddenly, the heavy doors of the NICU banged open again.
This time, it wasn't the DA.
It was a young woman in her early twenties, wearing a faded oversized hoodie, her face pale, stained with tears, and trembling violently. She clutched a crumpled social security card in her hand as she stumbled into the unit, her wide, panicked eyes darting frantically across the room until they landed on Bed Nine.
"My... my baby," she gasped, her voice cracking with hysteria. "Where is my baby?"
The nurses at the station froze.
I stepped out from behind the counter. "Ma'am? Can I help you? Are you family?"
The young woman burst into uncontrollable sobs, grabbing my arm. "I'm Chloe. Chloe Miller. I... I gave birth here last Friday. I was terrified. I didn't have any money, I didn't know where to go, and... and I left him. I ran away because social services said they were going to take him. But I couldn't sleep. I couldn't stop thinking about him. Please... please don't tell me he's gone."
Across the room, Sebastian froze.
The bottle slipped slightly from his fingers, catching the edge of the incubator tray.

He slowly lowered the baby back into the crib, his amber eyes locking onto the young mother standing twenty feet away.
The entire unit went dead silent.
