Chapter 4 - The Sound of Blood and Gold

For the next four days, the Moretti estate became a sanctuary frozen in time.
Outside the tall iron gates, the underworld of Manhattan was in chaos. Victor had gone into hiding, backed by the rival Russian Bratva syndicate led by a ruthless warlord named Nikolai Volkov. News of Marko’s death and the botched kidnapping at Bellamy’s Bakery had sent shockwaves through the five families. Everyone knew a storm was coming. Everyone knew Dante Moretti was preparing for war.
But inside the sunlit conservatory of the Westbury estate, the war was silent.
"No, Dante, lower your elbow," Emma corrected, leaning over Dante’s shoulder as he sat at the glass table. "If you hold your hand too high, you're signing dragon instead of father."
Dante grunted, lowering his broad forearm. He shaped his fingers again, pressing his thumb against his forehead.
Father.
Across the table, Mia looked up from her pancakes. She saw her father’s hand. She saw the precise, deliberate shape of his thumb against his temple.
Mia’s eyes widened. She set her fork down.
Dante looked at his daughter, his heart hammering against his ribs harder than it ever had during a street ambush. He moved his hands again, carefully shaping the words Emma had spent three hours teaching him late last night.
I. See. You.
I. Love. You.
You. Are. Safe.
The silence in the conservatory was absolute.
Mia stared at her father. Tears slowly filled her gray-blue eyes, spilling over her long dark lashes. She didn't move for three seconds. Then, with a joyful, heartbroken sob that carried no words but pure human emotion, the seven-year-old girl threw herself across the table, knocking over a vase of white lilies, and flung her arms around her father’s neck.
Dante froze for a fraction of a second, stunned by the impact. Then, his large, scarred arms wrapped around his daughter, pulling her tight against his chest, burying his face in her dark curls as his shoulders shook with quiet, silent sobs.
Emma stood near the glass doors, watching them. Tears pricked her own eyes, but she smiled, wiping her cheek with the back of her hand.
She thought of Noah. She thought of how her brother used to hug her whenever she mastered a new set of complex medical signs. Language wasn't just words; it was the key that unlocked the human soul from the prison of isolation.
Dante looked up over Mia’s shoulder. His gray eyes met Emma’s.
In that look, there was no mob boss. There was no ruthless killer. There was only a father whose life had been saved, offering a woman an eternity of gratitude.
Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the conservatory were thrown open.
Lorenzo rushed inside, his face pale, his suit jacket unbuttoned. "Don Dante. We have a major problem."
Dante gently set Mia back in her chair, his posture instantly hardening back into iron as he stood up. "Report."
"Victor just surfaced," Lorenzo said, glancing nervously at Emma and Mia. "He’s at the Plaza Hotel. He called an emergency meeting of the Five Families Commission for twelve o'clock today."
Dante’s eyes narrowed. "Under what authority?"
Lorenzo pulled a stack of faxed legal documents from his folder. "He produced certified copies of the trust agreements—stamped with Mia’s thumbprint. He’s claiming that you are mentally unfit to lead the syndicate, that you have been hiding a disabled heiress to prevent asset distribution, and that under Commission law, he is taking temporary custody of Mia and your corporate holdings."
Emma stepped forward, her face turning pale. "He’s using the forged thumbprints!"
"There's more," Lorenzo added, his voice dropping into a dark whisper. "Volkov’s Bratva has surrounded the Plaza. If you show up alone, it’s an execution. If you don't show up, the Commission will automatically grant Victor guardianship over Mia and freeze all your international accounts by two p.m."
Dante’s face turned into a terrifying mask of absolute, lethal ice. "He wants a war in front of the Commission."
"We can take fifty men, storm the Plaza, and wipe them out," Lorenzo offered, his hand resting on his sidearm.
"No," Emma interrupted sharply.
Both men turned to look at her.
"If you storm the Plaza with guns, you look like a madman trying to silence a family member," Emma said, her mind working with brilliant, practical clarity. "The Commission will side with Victor because it looks like you're confirming his story that you're unstable."
"And what do you propose, Miss Brooks?" Dante asked, his voice low and dangerous.
Emma walked over to the table, picking up Mia’s sketchbook. She opened it to the page where Mia had drawn the snake, the cage, and the blue ink.
"You don't take an army of guns, Dante," Emma said, looking straight into his pale gray eyes. "You take me. And you take your daughter."
Lorenzo gasped. "Are you insane?! Volkov’s men are looking for a reason to open fire!"
"Volkov wants to prove that Mia is an illiterate, helpless pawn who belongs in a state facility under Victor’s control," Emma said, her chin lifting with fierce pride. "I am going to walk into that Commission meeting, put Mia on the stand, and let her expose Victor’s forgery in fluent sign language in front of every boss in New York."
Dante stared at Emma.
He looked at her soft, round face, her unyielding hazel eyes, and the magnificent, terrifying courage that burned inside her plus-size frame. She was a thirty-one-year-old baker from Queens, yet she was standing in a room full of murderers, planning a masterpiece of psychological destruction.
Dante walked slowly over to Emma. He raised his hand, his large, warm fingers gently tracing the line of her jaw, resting against the soft curve of her cheek.
"Emma," Dante whispered, his voice vibrating with an intensity that made Emma’s breath catch in her throat. "If you walk into that room, there is no turning back. You become my queen in the eyes of the underworld."
May you like
Emma looked up into his fierce, beautiful face. She felt her heart race—not from fear, but from an overwhelming, powerful realization that she had already fallen deeply, irrevocably in love with this dangerous, wounded man and his silent daughter.
"Then let's go rule the world, Mr. Moretti," Emma whispered back.
