Chapter 4 - The Gala at BlackridgeThe annual Blackridge Autumn Charity Gala was the premier event of the Hudson Valley social calendar—a glittering evening where New York’s political elite, high-society donors, and underground bosses mingled under the crystal chandeliers of the mansion's main ballroom.

Tonight, the event doubled as the formal announcement party for Mason Whitmore and Veronica DeLuca’s upcoming wedding.

The grand ballroom was decorated in shimmering white and gold. Operatic violin music floated through the air, drowned out only by the low chatter of three hundred wealthy guests sipping vintage champagne.

Veronica DeLuca was in her element. She wore a breath-taking custom gown of emerald green velvet, her diamond engagement ring catching every beam of light. She stood near the main staircase, surrounded by her father, Senator Anthony DeLuca, her brother Julian, and a circle of admiring high-society women.

"It will be the wedding of the decade," Senator DeLuca boomed, raising his champagne glass. "The union of two great New York names."

Across the ballroom, standing quietly by the perimeter doors in a tailored black suit that matched the security detail, was Evelyn Brooks.

She held an earpiece discreetly against her right ear, monitoring the staff communications and security feeds. Her presence in the ballroom had infuriated Veronica, who had demanded that "the maid" be restricted to the kitchen.

Mason had overruled her instantly, stating that his private steward would manage his personal logistics during the event.

At 10:00 PM, Mason stepped onto the raised orchestra platform at the front of the ballroom. He wore a sharp black tuxedo, looking every inch the powerful sovereign of Blackridge House.

The room grew quiet as guests turned toward him, raising their glasses in anticipation of the formal toast.

Veronica floated toward the platform, her hand extended, expecting him to pull her up beside him.

Mason didn't take her hand.

He adjusted the microphone, his dark eyes sweeping over the crowd until they rested briefly on Evelyn standing near the back wall.

"Good evening, ladies and gentlemen," Mason began, his deep voice carrying clearly through the silent hall. "Thank you for joining us at Blackridge House tonight. For decades, our family has valued strength, unity, and above all, trust."

Veronica smiled radiant for the photographer’s flashes, taking a step closer to the platform stairs.

"Tonight was intended to be an announcement of a union between the Whitmore and DeLuca families," Mason continued smoothly. "A union built on shared interests and mutual respect."

He paused. He pulled a small silver drive from his tuxedo pocket and handed it to Vance, who stood beside the ballroom’s main audiovisual console.

"However," Mason said, his voice turning cold as mountain ice, "respect requires honesty. And honesty seems to be in short supply within the DeLuca family."

A sudden murmur rippled through the crowd.

Senator DeLuca’s smile froze. Julian DeLuca took a step forward, his hand reflexively reaching toward his jacket before Vance’s men quietly blocked his path.

"Mason?" Veronica whispered, her face pale. "What are you doing?"

Above the orchestra platform, the massive high-definition display screen that usually showed charity promotional slides flickered and changed.

High-resolution scans of the Vanguard Freight manifests appeared on the forty-foot screen, followed by bank transfer logs highlighting the $180,000 monthly payments to Aegis Holdings.

At the bottom of the screen, magnified five times, was Veronica DeLuca’s personal signature alongside federal customs interception reports filed two hours earlier by Mason’s legal team.

Gasps erupted across the ballroom. Photographers began flashing cameras frantically at the screen, then at Veronica.

"What is this lies?!" Julian DeLuca roared, trying to push past Vance. "This is a setup!"

"Those are federal evidence exhibits, Julian," Mason said, stepping down from the platform. "At seven o'clock this evening, the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York accepted those documents. Vanguard Freight has been seized. The Red Hook terminal is currently surrounded by federal agents."

Veronica stared at the screen, her breathtaking beauty crumbling into a mask of pure, unadulterated panic. She looked at her father, whose face had gone gray, then at the wealthy guests who were already backing away from her family as if they carried a contagious plague.

She turned her venomous gaze onto Mason.

"You ruined us!" she shrieked, her voice echoing hysterically through the grand hall. "You brought down my family for business logs?!"

"No, Veronica," Mason said, stopping three paces from her, his posture absolute and unyielding. "I brought you down because you mistook my patience for weakness. You thought you could bleed my family, threaten my people, and walk into this house as its mistress."

Veronica reached out, trying to grab his lapels, her long nails like talons. "Mason, please! It was Julian! He forced me—"

"Vance," Mason said quietly, turning his back on her. "Escort the DeLucas off my property. The federal marshals are waiting at the main gates."

As security guards seized Julian and Senator DeLuca, Veronica was led away, sobbing and screaming curses that echoed through the grand foyer.

The glittering crowd stood in stunned silence.

Mason walked through the middle of the ballroom, ignoring the whispered questions of politicians and millionaires.

He walked straight toward the back of the room, stopping directly in front of Evelyn.

In front of three hundred elite guests, Mason Whitmore offered his hand to his private steward.

"Miss Brooks," Mason said softly, his dark eyes shining with undeniable warmth. "I believe your shift is over. Would you care to join me for a glass of wine in the library?"

Evelyn looked at his offered hand, then into his eyes.

May you like

"I'd love to, Mason," she said.

And together, they walked out of the ballroom, leaving the shattered empire behind them.
