Chapter 6 - The New DynastySix months later, the autumn wind rustled through the manicured hedges of the Lake Forest estate, but inside the private family dining room, the atmosphere was warm, bright, and filled with quiet laughter.

Ruth Delaney sat at the head of the table, her health fully restored, smiling as a private chef poured her afternoon tea. Across from her, Nora sat in a deep emerald dress, reviewing a stack of international logistics manifests with the cool, effortless precision of a seasoned corporate executive.

The door opened, and Adrian rolled into the room. He didn't use the heavy motorized chair anymore for indoor movement; instead, he used a lightweight titanium manual chair, his upper body visibly stronger, his shoulders relaxed. He wheeled himself directly to Nora’s side, leaning down to press a soft, unhurried kiss to her temple—right where the fake silicone scar used to live.

“The board meeting in Frankfurt just signed off on the port acquisition,” Adrian said quietly, resting his hand over hers. “The Barone assets are officially liquidated. Your father’s trial starts next month, and the prosecutors have more than enough evidence to put him away for the rest of his natural life.”

Nora looked up from her paperwork, her copper eyes shining with a deep, unbreakable peace. She didn't feel like a hidden maid anymore. She didn't feel like a cruel joke or a damaged piece of property.

“And Celeste?” Nora asked softly.

“Fled to Miami with whatever cash she could scrape together before the federal freeze,” Adrian smirked, pouring himself a cup of coffee. “Without her father’s protection or your shadow to hide behind, she’ll be broke within a year.”

Nora smiled, leaning her head against Adrian’s shoulder. She looked around the sunlit room, remembering the terrified, shivering girl who had walked down the cathedral aisle six months ago, expecting a life of mockery and imprisonment.

“They all laughed when we got married,” Nora murmured, a playful edge to her voice.

“Let them laugh,” Adrian replied, pulling her closer as the afternoon sun wrapped around them like a shield. “They were laughing at a ghost. They had no idea what was hiding underneath.”
