Chapter 2 - The Contract and the CurseThe words hung in the sterile air like glass chimes about to shatter.

Gabriel Mercer did not move. For three seconds, his brain refused to process the sequence of syllables. Pregnant. The word was alien, a biological impossibility, a cruel joke whispered by a universe that had spent a decade stripping everything away from him.

Ten years ago, before the blood wars on the Cumberland River, before he built his Knoxville empire from the ashes of his father’s smuggling routes, Gabriel had married for duty. That first marriage had ended in tragedy and silence, marked by years of sterile doctors' offices, tearful ultrasounds, and specialists who looked at him with pity before delivering the inevitable verdict: The Mercer bloodline ends with you.

When he had legally married Emma Caldwell three months ago—a cold, calculated transaction designed to settle Diane’s crushing debt and secure the downtown real estate block containing the antique shop—he had known exactly what she was.

She was a collateral agreement. A debt-relief package wrapped in thrift-store cotton and hazel eyes.

He had expected a quiet, compliant wife who would stay out of his way, keep up appearances at civic functions, and perhaps learn to tolerate the shadows of his world. He had never expected her to look at him with those defiant, warm eyes across his own kitchen island. He had never expected to find himself walking through the antique shop after hours just to watch her restore a broken chair leg with calloused, steady fingers.

And he certainly had never expected this.

"That's impossible," Gabriel said quietly, his voice dangerously low. "The medical consensus was absolute."

"Consensus is just agreement until proven wrong," Dr. Vance replied defensively, holding up the lab printout. "HCG levels are elevated. Progesterone is surging. The ultrasound clearly shows an early gestational sac with a strong, viable cardiac pole. Mr. Mercer... against all odds, your wife is carrying a child."

Inside Trauma Room 3, Emma slowly opened her eyes.

The harsh white lights made her wince. She raised a hand to her temple, feeling the tight pull of a small sterile bandage above her left eyebrow. Her mouth tasted like copper and old tea.

What happened? she thought, looking around the unfamiliar room.

The door pushed open, and Gabriel stepped inside.

He moved with an unnatural, heavy deliberation. The aura of absolute control that usually surrounded him seemed fractured, replaced by a strange, dark intensity that made the hair on the back of Emma’s arms stand up.

"Gabriel?" she croaked, her throat dry. "Where is Aunt Diane?"

"She's outside," Gabriel said. He walked to the side of the hospital bed, his large frame casting a long shadow over her. He didn't smile. He rarely smiled. But his gaze—those dark, piercing eyes—scanned her face as if searching for a hidden trap.

"Did I break something?" Emma asked, trying to sit up. "The kitchen floor... I remember slipping on the flour..."

Gabriel reached out. His large, warm hand settled gently on her shoulder, pressing her back down against the pillow with firm, unyielding authority.

"Don't move," he commanded.

"Gabriel, stop treating me like I'm made of glass," Emma grumbled, though her heart did a strange, traitorous flip at the touch of his fingers. "I just hit my head. I'll be fine once I get some coffee and—"

"You aren't drinking coffee," Gabriel interrupted.

Emma narrowed her hazel eyes. "Excuse me? Since when do you dictate my beverage choices?"

Gabriel stared down at her for a long moment. The silence stretched between them, thick with unsaid words and shifting paradigms. Slowly, he reached into his breast pocket, pulled out the folded lab summary Dr. Vance had handed him, and laid it across the hospital blanket near her hands.

"Read it," he said.

Emma frowned, picking up the paper. Her eyes scanned the medical jargon, moving past the hemoglobin counts and electrolyte panels until they landed on the bolded diagnostic conclusion at the bottom of the page.

GESTATIONAL AGE: APPROXIMATELY 6 WEEKS. FETAL HEART ACTIVITY: DETECTED. DIAGNOSIS: INTRAUTERINE PREGNANCY.

Emma stopped breathing.

She read the lines once. Twice. Three times.

"This... this is a mistake," she whispered, her voice cracking. "It’s a clerical error. It has to be. The doctors in Nashville told me... when I was twenty-two... they said it could never happen. They said the scarring from my accident..."

"Dr. Vance verified the markers twice," Gabriel said, his voice dropping into that deep, gravelly register that always sent shivers down her spine. He stepped closer, planting both hands on the edge of the mattress, leaning over her until she was trapped beneath his gaze. "The lab results belong to you, Emma."

"How?" she breathed, looking up into his face. "Gabriel, how is this possible? Everyone... everyone said..."

"Everyone was wrong," Gabriel said softly.

May you like

He reached out, his calloused thumb gently brushing against her cheek, wiping away a stray tear she hadn't realized she’d shed. His touch was uncharacteristically tender, yet underscored by an intensity that terrified her.

"You belong to me now, Emma," Gabriel murmured, his eyes locking onto hers with absolute, terrifying possession. "And whatever is inside you... belongs to the Mercer name."
