Chapter 5 - The Trap Snaps Shut

Daniel stared at me for two seconds before bursting into a loud, mocking laugh that echoed through the high-beamed ceiling of the room.

"The State Police?" Daniel scoffed, standing up from his chair. "Nice try, Elena. There’s no cell service within three miles of this ridge. You haven't called anyone."

"I didn't need cell service," I replied calmly. "I connected my burner phone to the house's local fiber Wi-Fi four hours ago. And right now... every single word you, Monica, and I have spoken for the past ten minutes has been broadcast live via an encrypted video feed to the State Attorney General's office and Detective Marcus Cole."

I pointed toward the top of the stone fireplace.

Hidden behind a decorative wooden bowl was a tiny, high-definition 4K lens—a wireless security camera I had installed six months ago when I first suspected Daniel was cheating on me.

Daniel’s laugh died instantly in his throat.

He whipped his head around to stare at the fireplace. The tiny red LED light on the camera was blinking steadily.

"You bitch!" Daniel roared.

He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a heavy steel switchblade, flicking the six-inch blade open with a loud CLICK. The metal gleamed menacingly in the firelight.

"Daniel, no!" Monica shrieked, backing into the kitchen corner.

"If I'm going to prison for six million dollars, I'm not leaving you alive to testify!" Daniel snarled, stepping around the table, his face twisted into a demonic mask of pure rage.

He lunged toward me, raising the knife.

I didn't flinch. I didn't scream.

Instead, I reached beneath the dining table, grabbed the heavy iron poker I had hidden beside my chair earlier, and swung it with all the strength left in my body.

CLANG!

The heavy iron bar slammed directly across Daniel’s right wrist.

He screamed in agony as his arm snapped back. The switchblade flew out of his hand, clattering harmlessly across the hardwood floor and sliding under the sofa.

Before he could recover, I stood up, swung the iron poker again, and struck him squarely across the chest. The blow knocked the breath out of his lungs, sending him crashing backward onto the dining table. The porcelain soup tureen shattered, drowning him in hot mushroom broth.

"You thought I was weak because I loved you," I said, standing over him, holding the iron poker high above his head, my eyes burning with righteous fury. "You thought I was a helpless victim you could slip into a box!"

BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

The heavy front doors of the lake house were violently kicked inward with a deafening crash.

"STATE POLICE! NOBODY MOVE! DROP YOUR WEAPONS!"

A dozen heavily armed tactical officers clad in black Kevlar, helmets, and assault rifles spilled into the living room. Laser sights sliced through the dim light, painting bright red dots across Daniel’s chest and Monica’s forehead.

"DOWN ON THE GROUND! NOW!" an officer barked.

Monica instantly collapsed to her knees, weeping hysterically, throwing her hands over her head. "I surrender! Don't shoot! It was all Daniel! He made me do it!"

Daniel, covered in soup and clutching his broken, bruised wrist, lay groaning on the shattered dining table, unable to move as two officers pinned him down, yanked his arms behind his back, and double-locked heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.

Marcus Cole walked through the shattered front entrance, wearing a trench coat, holding a tablet computer that displayed the live, crystal-clear audio-video recording of Daniel’s full confession.

Marcus walked up to me, gently taking the iron poker from my hands, and wrapped a warm blanket around my shoulders.

"You okay, Elena?" Marcus asked softly, looking into my eyes.

I looked at Daniel, who was being dragged off the table by two officers. His face was covered in bruises and broth, his eyes filled with utter defeat, humiliation, and terror as he realized his life was officially over.

I reached up, touching the gold filigree medallion resting against my collarbone.

"I’ve never been better," I said.
