Chapter 6 - Judgment at Dawn

The executive boardroom on the fiftieth floor of Alfieri Tower was a citadel of glass, steel, and corporate betrayal.
At the long mahogany table sat Dante Alfieri, flanked by Marcus and four corrupt board members. Outside the floor-to-ceiling windows, the Chicago sunrise painted the skyline in shades of bruised purple and gold.
“Gentlemen,” Dante said smoothly, raising a glass of scotch. “It is regrettable that Nico’s tragic accident has left him unfit to manage the syndicate. We are here to ratify the transfer of his voting shares to the executive committee.”
“I’m afraid the vote is postponed,” a cold, echoing voice rang out from the double doors.
Dante spun around.
The heavy oak doors swung wide open. There stood Nico Alfieri, upright in his wheelchair, flanked by Vincenzo and a phalanx of loyal dockworkers and enforcers who had remained faithful to the true bloodline. Pushing Nico’s wheelchair was Adeline Marsh, her head held high, wearing a crisp new white lab coat over her scrubs.
Marcus leaped to his feet, his hand dropping toward his hidden shoulder holster. “Stop them! Security!”
“Security answers to me now, Marcus,” Nico said, his voice cutting through the room like a razor.
Vincenzo stepped forward, slamming a heavy folder onto the mahogany conference table right in front of Dante. Inside were the encrypted financial ledgers, the pharmaceutical poisoning logs, and the signed wire-transfer receipts proving Marcus and Dante’s treason.
“You’re finished, Uncle,” Nico stated, wheeling himself closer until he stopped at the head of the table. “You poisoned my food, you hired a hit squad on my estate, and you tried to steal my company while I was healing.”
Dante’s face flushed a mottled, ugly purple. He slammed his palms onto the table. “You have no proof! The board will vote me in regardless!”
“The board won't vote for anything from a prison cell,” Adeline stepped forward, placing a small audio recorder on the table and pressing play.
The room instantly filled with the crystal-clear recording of Marcus and Dante plotting the chemical slow-poisoning of Nico’s evening medication, complete with exact dosage schedules and confirmation of the hit squad's deployment.
Marcus turned white as chalk. Dante looked like he had been struck by lightning.
Federal marshals, tipped off anonymously by Adeline’s secure upload thirty minutes prior, streamed out from the service elevators, their badges gleaming under the boardroom lights.
“Marcus Lane, Dante Alfieri,” the lead marshal announced, snapping steel cuffs onto Marcus’s wrists first. “You’re under federal arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, corporate racketeering, and narcotics tampering.”
As Dante was dragged screaming and cursing from the boardroom, the remaining terrified board members slowly lowered their heads, unanimously voting to restore Nico to full, undisputed control of the Alfieri empire.
The chaos settled into a heavy, reverent silence.
Nico turned his wheelchair around, looking up at Adeline, who stood beside him with her hands crossed over her lab coat, a quiet victory shining in her eyes.
“Eighty-five thousand for your brother’s heart surgery was a bargain,” Nico said softly, a genuine, warm smile finally breaking across his rugged face. “Though I think you earned a permanent retainer as my chief medical officer.”

Adeline smiled back, the weight of Cicero’s poverty finally lifting from her shoulders. “Only if you promise to take your actual vitamins, Mr. Alfieri.”
Nico laughed, reaching out to take her hand. For the first time since the crash, the darkness that had haunted him was gone, replaced by the dawn of a brand-new empire built on truth, healing, and an unbreakable bond forged in fire.
