Chapter 4 - The Terminal Sequence

The piercing shriek of the emergency alarm reverberated off the reinforced concrete walls of the penthouse hallway.

Elena Vance stumbled backward half a step, her composed, corporate veneer cracking for the first time as the crimson strobe lights washed over her face. “You just tripped the lockdown, Dominic! If the backup servers purge, your entire network goes dark!”

“Let it go dark,” Dominic roared, lunging forward with terrifying speed.

Elena didn’t try to run. With shocking dexterity, she jammed the flash drive into a secondary diagnostic port on the wall panel beside her—a maintenance backdoor designed for system diagnostics. The red status light on the panel flickered green.

Upload in progress: 12%... 24%...

“Cole! Take her down, non-lethal!” Dominic ordered, closing the distance between them.

Cole lunged down the corridor, but Elena was faster than she looked. She whipped a small metallic device from her pocket and slammed it against the wall junction box.

Pop.

A thick plume of white smoke billowed from the hallway vents, instantly blinding the security cameras and plunging the end of the corridor into an acrid, choking haze.

“Boss! I can’t see!” Cole coughed, swinging blindly into the smoke.

Through the dense haze, Hannah—still kneeling by the vault control panel—heard the sharp click of Elena’s heels retreating toward the emergency stairwell.

“She’s heading for the roof exit!” Hannah yelled over the screaming alarm.

Dominic didn’t hesitate. He vaulted past Cole through the smoke cloud, sprinting toward the stairwell door with the relentless speed of a wolf on the hunt.

Hannah remained on her knees, coughing as the chemical smoke stung her eyes. Her fingers hovered over the exposed wiring of the vault panel. The emergency backup system was executing a hard reset; if the system purged before Dominic caught Elena on the roof, the offshore ownership hard-drives inside the vault would be magnetically wiped clean forever.

“Think, Hannah, think,” she muttered to herself, wiping a tear from her eye with the back of her bleach-scarred hand.

The data stream wasn’t routed through the main network anymore. Elena had hijacked the local auxiliary bus—the same bus Hannah had been trying to bypass a minute earlier.

She grabbed the two loose copper wires from the auxiliary relay switch.

Upload in progress: 78%... 85%...

If she crossed them incorrectly, the electrical surge would fry her hands. If she didn't cross them at all, Vale Holdings would crumble into federal receivership within the hour.

With a silent prayer, Hannah twisted the copper wires together and jammed them directly into the master logic gate of the vault control panel.

BZZZZT!

A violent blue arc of electricity snapped across her knuckles, burning her skin and throwing her backward against the mahogany wall. The entire hallway plunged into absolute, pitch-black darkness as the emergency power grid tripped offline.

Silence followed, heavy and suffocating, broken only by the crackle of residual static in the air.
