Chapter 1 - The Labyrinth of ShadowsThe narrow passage smelled of damp stone, old mortar, and decade-old dust.

Declan moved behind Norah, his custom Glock 19 held low, thumb resting on the safety. Every breath he drew felt like drinking crushed ice. The distant thrum of Vivaldi’s Winter leaked through the lath and plaster walls above, completely detached from the reality unfolding beneath the estate.
Norah stopped in front of a small iron observation grate hidden behind a double layer of vintage wallpaper. She didn't turn around; she merely raised two fingers, signaling for silence.
Declan stepped close, his body heat radiating through her thin cotton uniform. He pressed his eye to the iron grate, looking directly down into his private third-floor study.
What he saw severed every lingering thread of his childhood memories.
Liam Foley stood beside Declan’s polished mahogany desk. His underboss—the boy he had bled with in the alleys of South Chicago, the man who had given the eulogy at his father’s funeral—was casually adjusting a tiny radio receiver wired directly under the edge of the desk.
Four men in unmarked, non-attributable tactical gear crouched silently inside the adjacent library, their suppressed rifles aimed directly at the center of the Moroccan rug.
"He's running three minutes late," Liam muttered to a man standing near the doorway. "If he doesn't walk in by 12:05, detonate the charge manually and tell the Morettis his own security made a mistake."
"And the girl?" the tactical operative asked in a hushed tone.
"Norah?" Liam chuckled—a cold, empty sound. "Once the blast goes off, dump her body in the alley and paint it like she tried to rob the coat check. She served her purpose."
Behind the grate, Declan’s jaw locked so hard his teeth clicked. The fury inside him was a white-hot furnace, but his training kept his pulse slow and measured. He pulled back from the wall and grabbed Norah’s arm, turning her to face him in the dark passage.
"Who are you?" Declan whispered, his eyes burning into hers. "You aren't a maid, and you aren't a mobster's informant."
Norah looked up at him, her dark eyes completely clear of fear. "My name is Captain Norah Vance. Federal Bureau of Investigation, Organized Crime Division. I’ve been undercover in your house for three months tracking Liam Foley’s illegal arms pipeline."
Declan’s hand tightened on her wrist. "You're a federal agent?"
"A federal agent who just saved your life," Norah corrected, her voice barely an audible breath. "Liam isn't taking over your empire for himself, Declan. He sold you out to a rogue military syndicate operating out of New York. They don't want peace in Chicago; they want a full-blown war so they can sell weapons to both sides. If you step out there alone, you die. If I let them kill you, this city burns."
Declan stared at her, weighing her words against the ticking clock. A federal agent and a mafia boss trapped in the walls of his own house, surrounded by traitors.

"So," Declan murmured, a dark, dangerous smile touching his lips. "What's the FBI's plan when the target's underboss turns out to be a psychopath?"
"The FBI's plan was to arrest you both," Norah whispered back, stepping closer to him. "But right now? The plan is survival."
