The spring of 2026 was warm and bright, melting the last of the winter snow from the valley and bringing the wild lupines into beautiful, purple bloom.
The company’s newest development—a massive, sustainable research park designed to support green energy startups—was progressing ahead of schedule. But my life wasn't just filled with structural formulas and municipal contracts anymore.
Standing near the large windows of the project’s main lobby was a man named Dr. Thomas Thorne. He was a senior researcher in environmental engineering whom our firm had recruited from MIT to direct the park’s primary research facility. Over the last nine months, Thomas had become much more than a colleague. He was a man who listened to my architectural ideas with a deep, profound respect—a man who saw my strength and my intelligence not as threats to be managed, but as brilliant qualities he wanted to walk beside.
Thomas walked over to me, holding two cups of fresh espresso, his warm brown eyes reflecting a genuine, steady affection that made the last remnants of the old fear vanish from my mind.
"The site inspection was perfect, Evelyn," Thomas said softly, his fingers brushing against mine—warm, steady, and entirely safe. "The foundation pillars are perfectly balanced, and the carbon metrics are completely clean."
