Chapter 5 - Fire in San Pedro

The top floor of the Grand Horizon Hotel in San Pedro Garza García was an island of glass, polished marble, and cold, merciless power.

At four in the afternoon, the rain had cleared, leaving the panoramic windows overlooking the city of Monterrey glittering under a harsh, gray sky.

Kang Min-jun stood near the center table, wearing an immaculate dark blue suit. He was fifty-four, with slicked-back gray hair, sharp facial features, and eyes that held no more humanity than a polished piece of granite. Around the perimeter of the penthouse stood six private security guards armed with concealed submachine guns.

The heavy double doors opened.

Teresa Salgado walked into the room.

She wore a simple dark wool coat, her head held high, her feet moving with steady, deliberate rhythm across the white marble floor. Walking beside her was Lucía, whose hand was subtly hovering near the inside pocket of her jacket, where a small, modified flash drive rested against her ribcage.

Behind them came Daniel Han, dressed as a private courier, carrying a metallic briefcase containing the T-17 biometric terminal.

Min-jun didn't look at Daniel or Lucía. His gaze rested entirely on Teresa.

"Mrs. Salgado," Min-jun said in his quiet, elegant voice, bowing his head slightly in a mockery of respect. "A pleasure to finally meet the woman who has provided my organization with such exceptional stability for twelve years."

Teresa stopped five feet from him. She did not bow. She did not tremble.

"Where is the guarantee that my children walk out of this building alive?" Teresa asked, her voice echoing clearly off the high glass walls.

Min-jun smiled, a cold, hollow gesture. "Your children will be escorted to the parking garage the moment the Swiss confirmation light turns green on that terminal. You have my word as a gentleman."

"You are no gentleman," Teresa said softly. "You are a thief who hides behind a poor widow's name."

Min-jun’s smile tightened, a flash of dark anger crossing his eyes before he mastered himself. He gestured sharply to the table. "Set up the terminal."

Daniel Han stepped forward, setting the metallic briefcase on the glass table and opening the lid. Inside lay a high-resolution optical scanner and a biometric thumbprint pad connected to a satellite uplink router.

Lucía stepped beside Daniel, reaching down as if to adjust the power cable. With a split-second movement of her thumb, she clicked the modified flash drive into the covert maintenance port beneath the terminal's casing.

"The system is ready, Mr. Kang," Lucía said, her voice completely devoid of emotion.

Min-jun stepped up to the table, pulling a encrypted tablet from his jacket to monitor the live feed from the Swiss clearinghouse. "Proceed, Mrs. Salgado."

Teresa walked to the table. She looked at her daughter, receiving a faint, almost imperceptible nod.

Teresa placed her right thumb onto the glass pad. She leaned forward, positioning her right eye against the glowing blue ring of the optical scanner.

“Identity Confirmed: SALGADO_TERESA_1964,” a mechanical voice beeped from the terminal. “Initiating T-17 Master Transfer Sequence.”

On Min-jun's tablet, millions of financial data streams began to cascade down the screen in green text. Eight billion dollars—the accumulated wealth of twelve years of human trafficking, extortion, and illegal weapons trade—began its final migration toward the Panamanian trust.

Min-jun watched the screen with hungry, obsessive eyes. "Yes... clear it... clear it all..."

Suddenly, at ninety-eight percent completion, the green text on his tablet turned a violent, flashing red.

“CRITICAL SECURITY ERROR: OVERRIDE PROTOCOL ACTIVATED BY USER T-17,” the terminal blared. “GLOBAL ACCOUNTS FROZEN. ASSETS SEIZED BY BANK FOR INTERNATIONAL SETTLEMENTS.”

The room fell into absolute silence.

Min-jun stared at his tablet, his face draining of all color as he watched his entire life's work—every shell company, every Panamanian account, every Swiss trust—disappear into an irreversible digital vault.

Slowly, Min-jun raised his eyes to look at Lucía.

"What did you do?" he whispered, his voice trembling with a terrifying, psychopathic fury.

"I finished the job, Min-jun," Lucía said coldly.

Min-jun reached into his jacket, pulling a nickel-plated revolver and aiming it directly at Teresa's face. "You die first, old woman!"

"Mom!" Lucía screamed.

Before Min-jun could pull the trigger, Lucía threw herself across the glass table, slamming her body directly into her mother.

A deafening gunshot shattered the air in the penthouse.

Lucía gasped as a heavy bullet tore into her right shoulder, sending both her and Teresa crashing onto the marble floor.

At that exact second, Daniel Han drew his weapon, firing three rapid shots that eliminated the two nearest security guards.

"Federal Police! Nobody move!" Daniel roared.

The glass wall behind Min-jun exploded inward as heavy ropes descended from a tactical helicopter hovering above the hotel. Eight heavily armed operators from the Mexican Navy’s Special Forces breached the penthouse through the shattered windows, flashbang grenades detonating with blinding, disorienting roars.

The penthouse turned into a maelstrom of smoke, shattered glass, and tactical gunfire.

Min-jun, bleeding from a shoulder graze delivered by Daniel's return fire, scrambled toward the private executive elevator behind the bar, holding his tablet like a madman trying to save a ghost.

Teresa sat up through the smoke, ignoring the deafening noise around her, holding Lucía in her arms. blood was soaking rapidly through Lucía’s jacket, but her daughter was conscious, breathing, and looking up at her with clear, pain-filled eyes.

"Mom..." Lucía whispered, clutching Teresa’s hand. "Did... did it work?"

"It worked, my darling," Teresa wept, kissing her daughter's bloody forehead as federal medics rushed across the marble floor toward them. "It worked. You saved us."

Across the room, Daniel Han slammed Kang Min-jun against the elevator doors, kicking the revolver from his hand and pinning his face against the cold steel as titanium handcuffs clicked tightly around his wrists.

"Kang Min-jun," Daniel barked into his ear, his voice ringing over the sound of the helicopter blades outside. "Your empire is gone. You are under arrest."
