Chapter 3 - The Lens of Truth

"

Wait!" Dominic cried, grabbing the hem of Arthur's overcoat. "Mr. Pendelton... Lord Pendelton... please! This is a massive misunderstanding! Vivienne is my wife! I love her! I didn't know—I swear I didn't know!"

Arthur didn't even look down at the man kneeling at his feet. He simply took a step back, allowing his security guards to step between them.

"You let your mother tear my daughter’s dress," Arthur said, his voice flat. "You stood by while they accused a pregnant woman of theft. You are not a husband. You are a coward."

"But the ring!" Chloe yelled, her desperation making her bold. "She did take the ring! It’s gone! If she didn't take it, then where is it? My fiancé’s family will call off the wedding if we don't find it!"

I looked past Chloe, directly at Amanda, her cousin who was still clutching her silver evening purse.

"Mr. Harrison," I said, turning to the hotel director. "Please play the security footage from the ballroom on the main projection screens. The ones set up for the wedding slideshow."

"Right away, Lady Vivienne," Harrison said, pulling out a tablet. He tapped the screen twice.

Above the stage, the massive, state-of-the-art projection screens flickered to life. Instead of the planned montage of Chloe and her fiancé, a high-definition, multi-angle live feed of the ballroom appeared.

The technician rewound the footage by fifteen minutes.

The screen showed the crowded ballroom near the champagne fountain. Chloe was laughing, waving her hands animatedly as she talked to a group of guests. On her finger, the massive, three-carat marquise diamond ring was clearly visible.

As she raised her hand to adjust her hair, the ring—which was slightly too large for her finger—slipped off. It fell silently into the thick, plush velvet carpet beneath the table.

The camera zoomed in with terrifying clarity.

Chloe didn't notice. She walked away toward the dance floor.

A minute later, Amanda, her cousin, walked by the same table. She stopped, looking down. The camera captured her eyes widening as she spotted the sparkling diamond in the carpet.

Instead of calling out to Chloe, Amanda looked around. She saw the wedding planner, who was standing nearby. The two women exchanged a quick, knowing look. Amanda casually dropped her silver evening purse over the spot, knelt down to 'adjust her shoe,' and scooped the ring directly into her bag.

The entire ballroom watched the crime unfold in crystal-clear, 4K resolution.

"Oh my god," someone in the crowd whispered.

"It was Amanda!" another guest gasped.

Amanda’s face turned from pale to green. She backed away toward the exit, but two of Arthur's security guards blocked her path, their arms crossed over their chests.

"Amanda?" Chloe turned to her cousin, her voice cracking. "You... you took it?"

"I—I didn't!" Amanda stammered, dropping her purse. The silver clutch fell open, and the massive, sparkling million-dollar diamond ring rolled out onto the floor, stopping right at Chloe’s feet.

The wedding planner, realizing she was caught on camera as an accomplice, fell to her knees. "I’m sorry! I’m sorry! Amanda said we could sell it and split the money! She said Chloe would just get the insurance payout anyway!"

Chloe stared at the ring on the floor, then at her cousin, and finally at me.

The silence in the room was absolute, broken only by the quiet hum of the security cameras that had just exposed the ugly truth of the Miller family.
