Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary of Iron

The cold wind blowing off Lake Michigan felt like a breath of pure life after the suffocating air of the cathedral.

Waiting at the bottom of the cathedral’s massive granite steps was a matte-black Mercedes Sprinter van. The side door slid open automatically as I descended the stairs.

Standing inside the van was a tall, sharp-eyed woman in her late fifties, wearing a charcoal wool coat and holding a warm blanket in her hands.

It was Evelyn Vance.

Evelyn was the top high-conflict family law attorney in the Midwest—a legendary, terrifying legal shark who had spent thirty years tearing wealthy, abusive patriarchs to pieces in federal courts. She was also the woman I had secretly retained three months ago when I first realized my life was in danger.

"Get in, Audrey," Evelyn said firmly, holding out a hand to support me as I lifted my trembling legs into the vehicle. "Careful with your abdomen. Let me take the baby."

The moment I stepped inside, the door slammed shut and locked with a heavy pneumatic THUD. The blacked-out van accelerated smoothly away from the curb, leaving behind the chaotic circus of police cars, flashing cameras, and shouting reporters outside St. Bartholomew’s.

I collapsed onto the plush leather bench seat.

The adrenaline that had sustained me on the altar vanished instantly, leaving behind a crushing, paralyzing wave of physical pain. My vision swam with dark spots; my skin felt cold and clammy; my breathing was short and shallow.

"She’s in hypovolemic shock," a calm, professional voice called out from the back of the van.

A female trauma nurse in blue scrubs stepped forward from the rear compartment, where a fully equipped mobile medical station had been set up. She immediately laid me back on the reclining leather seat, hooked an oxygen cannula under my nose, and began wrapping a high-pressure automated blood pressure cuff around my arm.

"The incision on her lower abdomen is partially dehisced," the nurse reported, using trauma shears to carefully slice away the black silk dress and the blood-soaked gauze underneath. "We need to irrigate the surgical field, apply a vacuum dressing, and start a rapid IV saline drip immediately."

"Do it," Evelyn ordered, taking Maya gently into her arms, wrapping the baby in a sterile fleece blanket, and checking her vital signs with practiced efficiency. "How is the little one?"

"Her oxygen saturation is ninety-nine percent," the nurse said, inserting an IV needle into the back of my left hand with expert speed. "She’s just cold and hungry. Audrey, try to breathe slowly. The pain medication is entering your system right now."

Within seconds, a glorious, cooling sensation flooded my veins as the IV fentanyl kicked in, dulling the sharp, screaming pain in my abdomen to a distant, manageable throb.

I closed my eyes, letting out a long, shuddering breath.

"Did... did the audio work?" I rasped out through dry, cracked lips.

Evelyn chuckled—a low, dark, deeply satisfied sound. She pointed toward a twenty-inch flat-screen monitor mounted on the van’s bulkhead.

The screen was displaying live feeds from every major news network in the country.

CNN: LIVE: SHOCKING EMBEZZLEMENT AND ABUSE ALLEGATIONS ROCK STERLING DYNASTY AT FOUNDER’S FUNERAL.

MSNBC: BREAKING: STERLING ENTERPRISES STOCK PLUMMETS 34% IN PRE-MARKET TRADING FOLLOWING CATHEDRAL REVELATIONS.

CHICAGO TRIBUNE: THE BLOOD ON THE ALTAR: AUDREY STERLING EXPOSES BILLIONAIRE FAMILY ON LIVE TELEVISION.

"It didn't just work, Audrey," Evelyn said, looking down at me with a look of immense professional respect. "It was an absolute nuclear strike. Within four minutes of your broadcast, the State Attorney General’s office issued a formal press release announcing an immediate criminal investigation into Garrett Sterling and Samantha Sterling for conspiracy, medical endangerment, and extortion."

"What about Garrett?" I asked, my voice weak. "He’ll try to use his security team to find us. He knows my brother’s address."

Evelyn smiled grimly.

"Garrett isn't looking for you right now," she said. "He’s currently trapped inside St. Bartholomew’s parish office, surrounded by fifty federal agents from the IRS Criminal Investigation Division and the FBI Financial Crimes Unit. While you were standing on that altar, my team formally filed our federal whistle-blower package with the Department of Justice."

I blinked, trying to process her words through the cloud of pain medication. "The whistle-blower package?"

"The forty-two audio files you gave me didn't just document domestic abuse, Audrey," Evelyn explained, taking a seat beside me. "They documented twelve years of systematic offshore tax fraud, money laundering through the Sterling Charitable Foundation, and illegal bribery paid to city council members to secure construction permits for the Riverfront Development."

She leaned in close, her eyes shining with icy triumph.

"Arthur Sterling was a monster, but he was a smart monster. He kept those records hidden. Garrett, however, was lazy. He left the digital keys to his father’s encrypted server in his home office desk—the very keys you copied onto a thumb drive while he was at his club three weeks ago."

Tears overflowed my eyes, spilling onto the leather pillow beneath my head.

For four years, I had felt like a helpless pawn trapped inside an impenetrable fortress of wealth and power. I had spent countless nights crying myself to sleep in that cold North Shore mansion, convinced that the Sterlings were untouchable, that their money bought them immunity from the laws that governed ordinary human beings.

I had forgotten that even the tallest towers are built on foundations of paper—and if you burn the paper, the tower collapses into ash.

"Where are we going?" I asked softly.

"To a private surgical clinic in Evanston," Evelyn replied. "It’s owned by an independent trust completely untraceable to the Sterling family. Dr. Chen—a former chief of trauma surgery—is waiting for us. He’ll restitch your incision, treat your infection, and keep you and Maya in absolute isolation for the next two weeks."

She reached down, gently resting her hand over mine.

May you like

"You did it, Audrey," Evelyn whispered. "You survived the fire. Now, we take everything they have left."

The Sprinter van turned onto the interstate, speeding north toward safety, leaving the burning wreckage of the Sterling empire behind us in the dark Chicago snow.
