Chapter 2 - SHADOWS OF THE IRONWOOD

The subterranean dampness of the wine cellar was cold, but the air inside Gabriel’s chest burned like liquid fire. He laid Isabella down gently on a cot set up against the damp masonry wall. The young girl was pale, her forehead slick with cold sweat, but her eyes remained wide and locked on the woman who had just transformed from a servant into an assassin.

"Crystal..." Isabella whispered, her voice cracking. "My sisters..."

"Chloe has the blue key, Bella," Crystal said, her tone softening just enough to offer comfort without losing its tactical edge. "The room behind my wardrobe isn't a closet. It’s a reinforced panic space lined with Kevlar and independent air scrubbers. Luca could bring a grenade launcher upstairs and he wouldn't scratch the door frame. Your sisters are safe."

Gabriel checked his Kimber .45, sliding the magazine out to confirm his round count before snapping it back into place. He looked at Crystal, his dark eyes narrowing under the dim amber light of the cellar bulb.

"Why?" Gabriel demanded. "A woman with your record doesn't hide in a mob boss's estate dusting bookshelves for minimum wage. Who put you in my house?"

Crystal adjusted the straps of her tactical vest, pulling her dark hair back into a tight braid at the nape of her neck. "Three years ago, when my unit was ambushed in Kunduz, the intelligence leak that handed our coordinates to the Taliban came from a high-level clearinghouse in North America. A clearinghouse operated by the Chicago Outfit."

Gabriel’s breath hitched slightly. "The Commission."

"Your father’s old partners," Crystal corrected him coldly. "When I dug myself out of the dirt, I followed the money trail. It led to Chicago. It led to the Ironwood estate. I took the job as your maid to find the hard drives containing the Commission's historical transaction logs."

"Did you find them?"

"I found something better," Crystal said, looking him dead in the eye. "I found out that you didn't know anything about Kunduz. I found out that the illegal arms trade feeding the Eastern European syndicates wasn't run by Gabriel Romano—it was run by Luca Moretti, operating a shadow network right under your nose."

The realization hit Gabriel like a physical blow. The sudden supply shortages in Miami, the unexplained territorial disputes with the Slavic syndicates, the sudden breakdown of peace treaties his family had maintained for thirty years—it wasn't incompetent management or bad luck. It was Luca systematically sabotaging Gabriel’s empire to make him look weak before the Commission.

"And my wife?" Gabriel asked, his voice dropping into a register so dark it made the stone walls seem to chill. "The car explosion three years ago. The police said it was a faulty fuel line."

Crystal went silent for a beat. She looked down at the cot where Isabella lay monitoring them, then back at Gabriel.

"The detonator frequency used in your wife's vehicle matched a military-grade device sourced through a commercial port in Baltimore," Crystal said softly. "A shipment cleared by Luca Moretti’s personal freight company."

Gabriel closed his eyes. The rage that erupted within him was not a roaring fire; it was an absolute, zero-degree vacuum that sucked all air from his lungs. For three years, he had mourned his wife, believing her death was a tragic casualty of their high-risk life or a freak accident. For three years, he had allowed the man who murdered her to sit at his dinner table, to hold his daughters, to eat his bread.

"He dies tonight," Gabriel said quietly.

"He dies when we control the board," Crystal countered, stepping into his personal space, pointing a gloved finger at his chest. "Luca has at least twelve heavily armed mercenaries inside this house. They have night-vision gear, internal comms, and control of your estate's main security hub. If you charge up those stairs like a madman, they will put a bullet through your head before you reach the top landing, and then they will spend the next twelve hours cutting through my panic room door to get to your daughters."

Gabriel breathed in deeply, forcing the raging tide of his emotions back behind the wall of cold, calculating violence that had built his empire.

"What is the plan, Major?" Gabriel asked, acknowledging her tactical superiority in this specific arena.

Crystal pulled a small black device from her tactical belt—a portable signal jammer with a built-in frequency scanner.

"The estate’s primary power grid runs through the basement sub-station forty feet from here," she explained, pointing toward a heavy iron grate at the far end of the cellar. "We kill the power. The emergency generators will kick in, but I’ve already tampered with the automatic transfer switch. It will cause a forty-five-second total blackout across the entire house before the secondary back-up engages."

"In forty-five seconds," Gabriel said, a dark, lethal smile finally appearing on his face, "we hunt."

"You take the west wing security team," Crystal said, handing him one of her spare Glock magazines. "I take the main hall and secure the stairs leading to the girls. Isabella stays here, locked inside the cellar passage."

Isabella reached out, grabbing her father's sleeve. "Dad... be careful. Uncle Luca... he isn't alone. He brought men from the Russian syndicate."

Gabriel leaned down, kissing his daughter’s forehead gently. "Stay quiet, Bella. When I come back, this house will be ours again."

Crystal walked to the heavy iron grate, pulled a pair of bolt cutters from beneath the table, and snapped the padlocks holding the access hatch shut. Below lay the dark, cavernous utility tunnels connecting the Ironwood estate's various wings.

"Forty-five seconds, Gabriel," Crystal said, adjusting her earpiece and handing him a matching radio unit. "Count them in your head. Because at forty-six, the lights come back on, and anyone standing in the open is a target."

Gabriel racked his weapon, his expression transforming into the stone visage of the feared Chicago boss. "Then let's make sure we aren't standing in the open."
