Chapter 6 - Forty Centimeters to Forever

Six months later.
The summer sun beamed down brightly on the private coast of Lake Como, Italy. The sparkling blue waters reflected the soaring Alps in the distance, creating a landscape that looked like a Renaissance painting.
The storm that had threatened to consume them in Chicago was finally over.
Using the evidence Maya and Dante had gathered, Viktor had discreetly delivered a mountain of incriminating documents regarding Senator Hayes to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The resulting scandal had rocked the highest levels of government. Senator Hayes was currently awaiting trial, the corrupt prosecutors had been removed, and the RICO indictment against the Moretti family had been quietly dismantled.
Dante had used the opportunity to execute a brilliant, permanent exit strategy.
He had officially retired from the Chicago Commission, transferring all operational control of his legitimate business holdings—construction, real estate, and shipping—into a blind trust managed by Viktor. The criminal operations were completely dismantled or sold off to international buyers. Dante Moretti was no longer a mob boss. He was a philanthropist, an international businessman, and a free man.
On the grand terrace of a breathtaking Italian villa, white silk curtains fluttered in the warm Mediterranean breeze.
Maya stood near the stone balustrade, looking out over the lake. She wore a breathtaking, simple white lace gown that clung softly to her curves. Her dark hair was styled in elegant, loose waves adorned with tiny white orchids.
She looked radiant, peaceful, and profoundly happy. Her mother and brother were sitting at a decorated table nearby, laughing and drinking champagne with Doc Vance and Viktor, who had traded his tactical gear for a fine Italian suit.
A pair of strong, familiar arms wrapped around Maya’s waist from behind.
Dante pulled her close against his chest. He wore a crisp white linen shirt, unbuttoned at the collar, and black trousers. He looked healthier and happier than Maya had ever seen him. The dark shadows beneath his eyes were gone, replaced by a deep, enduring warmth.
"You're ignoring your guests, Mrs. Moretti," Dante murmured, resting his chin on her shoulder, kissing her cheek.
They had been married two hours ago in a private chapel overlooking the lake.
Maya leaned back against him, closing her eyes, savoring the feeling of his heartbeat against her back—strong, steady, and vibrant.
"I was just thinking," Maya said softly, turning in his arms to face him, placing her hands on his chest.
"Thinking about what?" he asked, his gray eyes locking onto hers with unconditional love.
"About the night we met," she said, a playful smile touching her lips. "In Trauma Bay One. You were covered in blood, staring at me like you wanted to execute me for cutting off your expensive shirt."
Dante laughed softly, running his fingers gently along her jawline. "I was staring at you because you were the only person in that room who wasn't afraid of me. You were bossing around senior surgeons, pressing your small hands against my chest, telling me to stay with you."
"And you did," she whispered.
"I had to," Dante replied, his voice dropping into a tender, serious tone. "My heart was forty centimeters away from dying, Maya. And then you touched me, and you gave me a reason to keep breathing."
Dante reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet-lined box. He opened it to reveal a delicate, custom-made necklace. It was a fine platinum chain holding a polished, forty-millimeter bar of solid diamond, sparkling brilliantly in the Italian sunlight.
Maya gasped softly. "Dante... it's breathtaking."
"Forty millimeters," Dante said, lifting the necklace and fastening it gently around her neck. "A reminder of the forty centimeters that brought you into my life. A reminder that no matter how close the darkness gets, you will always be my anchor."
Maya touched the sparkling diamond bar, feeling tears of pure joy filling her eyes. She looked up at her husband—the man who had fought through hell, poison, and war to protect her and give her a future.
"I love you, Dante," she said, her voice filled with deep, unshakable emotion.
"I love you, Maya," Dante answered, leaning down to press his lips against hers in a deep, passionate kiss that sealed their past, their present, and their forever.

Around them, the Italian sun shone brightly over the quiet waters, and for the first time in his life, Dante Moretti felt completely at peace. The danger was gone, the shadows had retreated, and the doctor who had saved his heart now held it in her hands forever.
