Chapter 6 - The Queen of the Gilded LilyOne year later.

The Gilded Lily had undergone a complete transformation.

The dark, smoke-filled subterranean VIP lounge that had once been a den for corrupt politicians and ruthless murderers was now the most exclusive, high-class establishment in Manhattan. The velvet drapery was rich gold, the crystal chandeliers sparkled like diamonds, and the air smelled of fresh white roses and expensive champagne.

At the center corner booth—the very booth where Scotch had been spilled a year ago—sat Roman Falco.

He wore a bespoke navy three-piece suit, looking every bit the undisputed emperor of New York’s legitimate shipping and real estate empire. The syndicate was clean now, its old bloodlines purged, its power consolidated into an iron fortress that no family in the city dared to challenge.

Beside him sat Norah.

She looked breathtaking. She wore an elegant floor-length gown of emerald green silk that highlighted the warmth of her hazel eyes. Her dark hair was styled in soft waves over her shoulders, and around her neck hung a stunning solitaire diamond pendant—a personal gift from Roman on their engagement three months prior.

She was no longer the trembling waitress in a bruised uniform. She was the Director of the Arthur Vane Memorial Foundation, a multi-million-dollar charity that funded shelters and education for orphaned children across the state of New York.

And she was the undisputed queen of Roman Falco’s heart.

Gideon walked up to the table, carrying a silver tray with a bottle of 30-year-old Macallan and two clean crystal glasses. He set it down with a respectful bow.

“Everything is prepared for the gala tonight, Miss Norah,” Gideon said with a warm smile that he reserved only for her. “The Mayor and the Governor have already arrived.”

“Thank you, Gideon,” Norah smiled softly.

Gideon retreated, leaving the couple in their private sanctuary.

Roman reached out, taking Norah’s hand in his. His large fingers, covered in platinum rings, gently stroked the band of the diamond engagement ring resting on her finger. He lifted her hand to his lips, pressing a soft, lingering kiss to her knuckles.

“What are you thinking about, little bird?” Roman asked softly, his gray eyes warm with absolute devotion.

Norah looked around the sparkling lounge, then back into the eyes of the man who had transformed her life.

“I was thinking about the night I spilled that drink,” Norah admitted with a soft, melodious laugh. “I thought my life was over. I thought I was going to be thrown into an alley over a bottle of Scotch.”

Roman smiled—a real, breathtaking smile that reached his eyes and softened every sharp angle of his handsome face.

“That spilled Scotch was the greatest blessing of my life,” Roman murmured, leaning in until his breath brushed against her lips. “It brought me Arthur’s daughter. It brought me my heart.”

“And what did it bring me?” Norah teased softly, her hazel eyes sparkling with love as she leaned into his touch.

Roman pulled her closer, his broad arm wrapping around her waist, pulling her flush against his chest right there in the center of the room for everyone to see.

“It brought you a tyrant who belongs to you completely,” Roman whispered into her mouth.

He kissed her then—a deep, passionate, possessive kiss that tasted of sweet champagne, cedar, and an everlasting promise of protection.
