Chapter 4 - The House of Cards Trembles

On Monday morning at 8:00 AM, I sat in my office at Northline Fiduciary Group, staring at the financial news ticker.
The market had just opened, and the first ripples of the storm were beginning to show. The stock price of Hayes Global Logistics was already down four percent on rumors of liquidity issues.
At 8:30 AM, my personal assistant knocked on my door. "Ms. Hayes? There is a Mr. Graham Hayes on line one. He sounds... urgent."
"Put him through," I said, putting the call on speaker.
"Issa!" Graham’s voice was ragged, devoid of the booming authority he usually projected. "What did you do? The bank just called. They've frozen our primary operating lines. They're demanding $45 million by noon or they’re declaring a default!"
"I told you yesterday, Graham," I said calmly, leaning back in my leather chair. "Vanguard Meridian is under regulatory lockup. You cannot use those assets as collateral while they are under investigation for tax evasion."
"Undo it!" he screamed. "Call them and tell them it was a mistake! A technical glitch! I'll give you whatever you want. You want a seat on the executive board? It’s yours. Just fix this!"
"It's out of my hands," I lied smoothly. "The Cayman Islands Monetary Authority has already opened a formal inquiry. If I attempt to lift the freeze now, I would be complicit in corporate fraud. And unlike you, I value my career and my freedom."
"You're destroying us!" Graham gasped. "Your mother... Belle... we will lose everything! The house, the reputation, the company!"
"You should have thought about that before you allowed Belle to assault me, and before you told me to get out of your sight," I said. "You chose her. You chose your reputation. Now you can watch both of them burn."
I hung up the phone.
An hour later, my phone buzzed with an alert from a popular Seattle social media account. Belle had posted a tearful video, her eyes puffy, claiming she was being "targeted and harassed by an estranged family member." She was trying to play the victim, attempting to rally her high-society followers to her defense.
But the comment section was already turning against her. A video taken by a guest at the gala had leaked.
It showed the entire incident in agonizing detail: the accidental bump, Belle's face twisting with rage, and the brutal, resounding slap she delivered to my face, followed by our mother’s cold dismissal of me. The caption of the viral post read: “Seattle billionaire’s daughter Belle Hayes assaults her own sister at charity gala while parents watch and protect her.”
The public court of opinion had reached its verdict, and the execution was swift.

By 11:30 AM, Belle's major photoshoot with Seattle Style Magazine was officially canceled. Her brand sponsors were releasing public statements distancing themselves from her "violent and unacceptable behavior."
The house of cards wasn't just trembling; it was imploding.
