PART 5: The Courtroom Showdown

The steps of the Avenida Juárez Family Court were a chaotic circus on Thursday morning.
Flashbulbs popped and reporters yelled questions as Doña Amparo arrived, flanked by Julián and two security guards holding umbrellas to block her face from the cameras. Amparo was wearing a dark veil and oversized sunglasses, her head bowed, a stark contrast to the proud, arrogant matriarch who had entered Fernanda's apartment four days prior. Julián looked pale, his eyes darting nervously toward the small crowd of protesters holding signs that read "Justice for Mateo" and "Silence is Complicity."
A few minutes later, Fernanda arrived with her father, Don Ernesto. She wasn't hiding behind sunglasses or veils. She walked with her head held high, wearing a simple, neat blue blouse.
Before the media could swarm her, a tall, striking woman in a tailored black suit stepped into the path, blocking the reporters with an authoritative wave of her hand. It was Licenciada Valeria Villarreal. Her presence alone seemed to command the room; she had a sharp, aristocratic demeanor that radiated absolute competence.
"Fernanda, it’s an honor," Valeria said, shaking her hand firmly. "Don't say a word to the press. Let your face show your dignity. We are going into Courtroom 4. The judge assigned to this case is Judge Alarcón—he is traditional, but he is notoriously strict about child welfare. Valenzuela thinks he can use old-school intimidation tactics. He has no idea what he's walked into."
Inside the courtroom, the atmosphere was suffocatingly tense.
Doña Amparo sat on the right side of the aisle, refusing to look at Fernanda. Julián sat next to her, fidgeting with his wedding ring—a ring he still hadn't taken off.
When Judge Alarcón entered, the room fell into a heavy silence. He adjusted his glasses and looked through the thick manila folders on his desk, his expression unreadable.
"We are here for an emergency petition for temporary custody of the minor Mateo Salgado, filed by the father, Mr. Julián Salgado, supported by an allegation of domestic violence and physical assault against Mrs. Amparo Salgado," the judge announced, his voice echoing off the wood-paneled walls. "Counselor Valenzuela, you have the floor."
Valenzuela stood up, confidently smoothing his jacket. "Thank you, Your Honor. The facts are simple and deeply disturbing. The respondent, Fernanda, has demonstrated an unstable, highly violent nature. On Saturday, during a private family gathering, she viciously assaulted my client, an elderly woman with documented cardiovascular issues, by physically forcing a contaminated package into her face. This violent outburst was recorded and intentionally leaked to social media to cause maximum reputational damage, creating an unsafe, chaotic environment for the minor. We have submitted medical reports detailing Mrs. Amparo’s elevated blood pressure and severe emotional shock. The child is currently living in an environment of instability and media frenzy. We request immediate temporary custody be granted to the father, with residence at the paternal grandmother’s estate."
The judge nodded slowly, making a note. "Licenciada Villarreal, your response?"
Valeria Villarreal stood up. She didn't look at Valenzuela; she looked directly at the judge.
"Your Honor, opposing counsel has given you a heavily distorted narrative that relies entirely on a sequence of events stripped of its context. They claim my client is unstable. I submit to this court that my client acted under the highest form of maternal protective instinct against an act of profound, calculated psychological abuse directed at a five-year-old child."
Valeria opened her briefcase and pulled out a digital tablet, connecting it to the courtroom’s presentation screen. "We have submitted the complete, unedited video evidence into the judicial record, authenticated by digital forensic experts to prove it has not been altered. I ask Your Honor to view the two minutes preceding the physical altercation."
Valenzuela jumped to his feet. "Your Honor, this video has been used to defame my client globally! It shouldn't be validated in this courtroom!"
"It is the exact video your client recorded, Counselor," Valeria fired back, her voice cutting through his objection like a razor. "She started the broadcast. Let us look at what she wanted the world to see."
The judge waved his hand. "Objection overruled. Play the video."
The screen flickered to life. The audio filled the courtroom. The judge watched in complete silence as Amparo’s voice echoed through the room: “Disobedient children need to be taught through pain... It's a lesson.”
The courtroom seemed to drop ten degrees as the video showed the discovery of the filth, the five-year-old boy recoiling in terror, crying, hiding under the table, asking what he had done wrong. The camera caught Amparo’s proud, mocking smile, and then—crucially—it caught Julián, standing two feet away, completely indifferent to his son’s agony.
Judge Alarcón’s face went entirely rigid. His eyes drifted from the screen to Doña Amparo, who suddenly looked very small under his gaze.
"Furthermore, Your Honor," Valeria continued, her voice ringing with powerful authority, "we have submitted a certified psychological evaluation of the minor, conducted yesterday afternoon by the chief of pediatric psychology at the National University. The report confirms that Mateo shows signs of severe, systemic emotional manipulation and intimidation dating back several months, directly linked to his visits with the paternal grandmother. The gift brought to his birthday was not an isolated incident; it was the culmination of a campaign of cruelty designed to break the child's spirit."
Valeria stepped toward Julián’s desk. "And what did the father do? He didn't just stay silent during the party, Your Honor. We have submitted bank records proving that forty-eight hours after this incident, Mr. Julián Salgado transferred all the funds from his and Fernanda's joint savings account—money intended for their son’s medical insurance and education—into his mother’s personal account. He attempted to financially starve his wife into surrendering their child."
Julián’s face drained of color. He looked at his lawyer, but Valenzuela was staring at his own shoes, realizing the case had completely fallen apart.
Judge Alarcón closed the folder with a sharp slam that sounded like a gunshot in the quiet room. He took off his glasses and leaned forward, his eyes burning with an intense, judicial fury.
"Mr. Salgado," the judge said, his voice dropping to a terrifyingly low pitch as he addressed Julián. "A father’s primary, unassailable duty under the constitution of this republic is the protection and well-being of his child. You didn't just fail that duty; you actively bartered your son’s mental health to appease your mother’s malice. And then you had the audacity to use this court to strip a protective mother of her rights using financial extortion."
The judge turned his gaze to Amparo, who shrank back into her seat. "Mrs. Amparo Salgado, your actions are a grotesque violation of family law. To bring bio-hazardous waste to a child’s birthday party to enforce 'humility' is not discipline; it is an act of unmitigated cruelty. You are lucky the state prosecutor hasn't formally filed criminal abuse charges against you yet—though, after today, I will personally ensure this file is forwarded to their office."
The judge picked up his gavel.
"The petition for temporary custody filed by Mr. Julián Salgado is denied with prejudice. Full, sole physical and legal custody of the minor Mateo Salgado is granted immediately to the mother, Fernanda Salgado. Mr. Julián Salgado's visitation rights are completely suspended pending a full psychological evaluation and six months of mandatory, court-monitored anger and dependency therapy."
The judge pointed a stern finger at Amparo. "A strict, permanent restraining order is issued against Mrs. Amparo Salgado. She is barred from coming within five hundred meters of the minor, his home, or his school. Any violation of this order will result in immediate arrest and incarceration."
Bang!
The gavel fell.
"This court is adjourned."
Fernanda sank into her chair, her face buried in her hands, her shoulders shaking as a flood of tears washed over her. Don Ernesto threw his arms around her, weeping openly, his rough hands trembling with joy.
Across the aisle, Amparo stood up quickly, trying to maintain a shred of her pride, but as she reached the courtroom exit, a pair of local police officers stepped into her path, holding a formal summons from the district attorney's office regarding child endangerment charges. Her eyes went wide as the reality of her complete ruin finally set in.
Julián stood alone by his table, watching his wife receive the congratulations of her legal team. He took a hesitant step toward her.
"Fernanda..." he whispered, his voice trembling, filled with a sudden, desperate regret. "Please... I didn't want it to go this far. My mom... she forced me. Let me see my son."
Fernanda stopped. She wiped her tears, turned around, and looked at him. There was no hatred in her eyes anymore—only a profound, unshakeable indifference.

"You had your chance to choose your son, Julián," Fernanda said, her voice completely steady. "Every second you stood silent in that living room was a choice. You chose her. Now, you get to live with her."
She turned her back on him and walked out of the courtroom, stepping into the bright, morning sunlight.
