Chapter 5 - The Scales of Justice

The family court building on Avenida Juárez was crowded, chaotic, and smelled faintly of floor wax and stale coffee.
I sat at the wooden defense table, dressed in a sharp navy blazer, my hands resting calmly over a thick manila folder filled with documentation, bank records, and sworn affidavits.
Sitting right beside me was not a public defender, but Mateo Gomez—the brilliant civil litigator who had helped countless women escape financial abuse—backed by a powerhouse legal team funded entirely by an anonymous benefactor who happened to share initials with a certain former bride.
Across the aisle sat Antonio.
He looked terrible. His suit was wrinkled, his hair unwashed, and his eyes bloodshot from sleepless nights of panic and paranoia. He was representing himself for the first time, flanked only by a sleazy, low-tier counsel who looked like he spent more time in traffic court than corporate litigation.
The judge, a stern magistrate with graying hair and a no-nonsense demeanor, adjusted his glasses and looked down at the case file.
“Case number 4892,” the judge announced, his voice echoing off the concrete walls. “Morales versus Santos. Action for paternity recognition and custody visitation.”
Antonio stood up immediately, his voice trembling with manufactured righteousness.
“Your Honor, I am the biological father of the child, Mateo Morales,” Antonio blurted out, gesturing wildly toward me. “The mother has illegally restricted my access to my son, hidden him from me, and refused to acknowledge my parental rights. I demand joint custody and immediate visitation!”
The judge looked over at our table. “Counsel? How does the defense respond?”
Mateo Gomez stood up calmly, buttoning his suit jacket.
“Your Honor, we do not contest the biological paternity,” Mateo said smoothly. “In fact, we welcome it. However, before the court entertains any petitions for custody or visitation from the petitioner, we would like to submit a formal motion for financial restitution, back child support calculation, and criminal endangerment charges.”
Antonio’s face drained of color. “What?! That’s absurd! You can’t do that!”
“Quiet, Mr. Santos,” the judge warned, banging his gavel. “Proceed, Counsel.”
Mateo Gomez walked up to the judge’s bench and handed over a set of verified financial documents.
“Your Honor, for the past nine months while the petitioner was maintaining an illicit relationship and promising marriage to another heiress, he systematically harassed, threatened, and coerced my client—who was then a heavily pregnant frontline healthcare worker—into silence,” Mateo stated clearly. “Furthermore, on the exact hour of the child’s birth, the petitioner entered the hospital room not to check on the welfare of his newborn son, but to demand that the mother erase the child’s existence to protect his social standing.”
The judge’s eyebrows shot up as he reviewed the transcript logs and hospital security footage stills that had been legally subpoenaed and attached to our filing.
“We have sworn text messages, audio recordings of his threats, and financial audits proving that the petitioner has abandoned his legal and moral obligations entirely,” Mateo concluded. “We ask the court to grant full, sole legal and physical custody to the mother, issue a permanent restraining order protecting the child, and order an immediate garnishment of all remaining assets held by the petitioner to cover retroactive child support.”
Antonio leaped to his feet, screaming in panic. “Lies! All lies! She’s framing me! She’s a gold-digger!”
“Bailiff!” the judge shouted, banging his gavel three times. “Remove the petitioner from the courtroom for contempt!”

Two security guards grabbed Antonio by the arms, dragging him kicking and screaming down the aisle as his legal counsel quietly packed his briefcase and slipped out the side door.
I didn't flinch. I didn't smile. I just watched him get dragged out of my life forever, knowing the nightmare was finally over.
