Chapter 2 - The Facade Cracks

The atmosphere in the east sitting room shifted from shock to a suffocating tension. Madison scoffed, crossing her arms and attempting to minimize her actions as mere stress over the upcoming wedding. But Ethan wasn't listening to her justifications. He focused entirely on Clara, whose eyes betrayed a lifetime of learned submission. He recognized that look instantly—it was the same expression he had worn as a boy when his shoes were too small and his father had told him to endure the pain in silence.

Clara tried to pull her uniform sleeve down, murmuring that she was fine and that it didn't matter. Ethan refused to let it go. When he assured her that she would not lose her job for speaking the truth, Clara’s eyes filled with tears, confirming that the threat of unemployment had been Madison’s primary weapon to keep her silent.

Madison’s sweet facade began to fray under Ethan's icy silence. “Ethan, you're making a mountain out of a molehill,” she snapped, her voice losing its melodic cadence. “She’s just household help. Every high-society home has staff turnover. If she can't handle a simple antique vase, she doesn't belong here.”

“She has worked in this house for four years,” Ethan said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, controlled whisper. “Longer than I’ve known you. Pack your bags, Madison.”

“Pack my bags?” Madison stared at him, her blue eyes widening in disbelief. “We are getting married in thirty-eight days! My father is a major investor in your logistics expansion! You cannot be serious over a—over a maid!”

“Get out of my house,” Ethan repeated, turning his back on her to help Clara to her feet.

Realizing that tears and manipulation were no longer working, Madison’s expression hardened into genuine malice. She snatched her designer handbag from the sofa, her diamond ring catching the light. “You’ll regret this, Ethan Hale. You think you're untouchable, but without my family’s backing, your next board meeting is going to be a bloodbath.” She stormed past him, the heavy oak doors slamming behind her with a vibration that rattled the windowpanes.
