Chapter 6 - A New Dawn

One year later.
The autumn wind whipped through the gardens of the Hartwell estate in upstate New York, painting the maple trees in brilliant shades of amber and crimson.
A small, intimate gathering of close friends, trusted colleagues, and federal officials who had helped us clear our names filled the stone patio. There were no press cameras, no corporate sharks, and no toxic family members.
Standing beneath an arbor draped in white roses, I wore a simple ivory lace dress, my hair woven with delicate silver flowers.
And walking down the stone aisle toward me, holding a walking toddler who was wobbling unsteadily in shiny pink shoes, was Julian.
Rose let out a delighted squeal, pointing a chubby finger at me. "Mama! Mama!" she babbled, breaking free from Julian's grip for three triumphant steps before tumbling softly onto the plush green grass into a fit of giggles.
Julian scooped her up effortlessly, brushing a blade of grass from her yellow dress, and walked the rest of the way to the altar with a smile that completely transformed his formerly austere features.
When he reached me, he handed a giggling Rose to her godmother, Arthur Sterling’s wife, before taking both of my hands in his.
"You know," Julian whispered, his gray eyes shining with unshed tears, "when you walked into my divorce hearing a year ago carrying our daughter, I thought my life was ending."
"And instead, it finally began," I smiled, leaning up to press my lips softly against his.
