Chapter 5 - The Siege of Sanctuary

The heavy oak door rattled violently as Marco’s loyalists sprayed it with automatic gunfire from the hallway. Splinters flew into the master suite, the dense wood groaning under the onslaught of lead.
"Mommy!" Lily shrieked, bolting upright in bed, clutching Leo in sheer panic.
Leo’s eyes were wide, but he didn't cry. He wrapped his arms tightly around my daughter, his voice trembling but determined. "I've got you, Lily! Stay down!"
Dante groaned from the floor, clutching his bleeding shoulder, his fingers slick with crimson. "Boss... the outer comms are dead. Marco... Marco paid off the midnight shift guards. He's got at least twenty men in the house."
Dominic didn't panic. The moment the betrayal was laid bare, the grief, the doubt, the sorrow—all of it vanished, replaced by the lethal, calculating genius that had made him the undisputed king of Boston's underworld.
"Isabella," Dominic commanded, his voice cold, steady, and terrifyingly calm. "Take the children into the master bathroom. The walls are reinforced with six-inch Kevlar panels. Lock the door from the inside and do not open it for anyone. Not even me, unless you hear my specific voice."
He crossed the room in three strides, ripping open a concealed panel behind an oil painting on the wall. Inside hung an array of tactical weaponry: assault rifles, spare magazines, and tactical vests.
"Dominic," I cried, grabbing his forearm as he pulled down a customized short-barreled rifle. "He killed your wife. He's coming to finish Leo!"
Dominic looked down at me. The icy detachment in his gray eyes shattered for a split second, revealing a blazing inferno of love and protective fury. He reached out, his hand cupping the back of my neck, and pulled me violently toward him, pressing his lips hard, desperately against mine.
The kiss was fierce, bruising, and tasted of adrenaline and destiny.
"He won't touch any of you," Dominic swore against my lips, his breath hot against my mouth. "I will burn this house to the foundation and drag Marco to hell before I let him lay a finger on my family. Go. Now!"
I pulled back, my lungs burning, and sprinted to the bed. I scooped Lily into my arms and grabbed Leo’s hand, dragging them into the massive, marble-lined master bathroom.
"Dante! Get in here!" I yelled to the wounded guard.
Dante dragged himself across the floor, his teeth gritted in agony, rolling into the bathroom just as another barrage of gunfire chewed through the bedroom door. I slammed the reinforced bathroom door shut and turned the heavy brass deadbolt.
Outside in the bedroom, all hell broke loose.
Through the heavy door, the sound was deafening. Dominic’s rifle roared with rhythmic, controlled bursts. Screams of agony tore through the air, followed by the dull *thuds* of heavy bodies hitting the floor. Dominic fought like an ancient demon unleashed, moving with lethal precision, systematically executing the traitors who had invaded his sanctuary.
"Die, you bastard!" a man's voice screamed outside.
A single gunshot echoed. A wet gurgle followed. Then silence.
Inside the bathroom, I knelt on the marble floor, pressing Leo and Lily against my chest beneath the heavy cast-iron clawfoot tub.
"Mommy," Lily sobbed, burying her nose into my neck. "I want the bad noise to stop."
"Sing with me, baby," I whispered frantically, tears spilling down my face as I tried to drown out the slaughter happening ten feet away. "Sing our song. *Twinkle, twinkle, little star...*"
Leo joined in, his small, cracking voice singing through his tears: "*...How I wonder what you are...*"
Suddenly, the bathroom ventilation grate near the ceiling rattled.
Dante cursed, trying to raise his pistol with his good hand, but the blood loss had taken its toll; his arm shook uncontrollably, his vision swimming as he slumped against the marble vanity.
The grate was kicked violently from above.
A flash-bang grenade dropped onto the tile floor.
"SHIELD YOUR EYES!" I screamed, throwing my entire body over both children, pressing them hard against the base of the tub.
*BANG!*
A blinding white light and a concussive boom shattered my senses. My ears rang with a deafening, high-pitched screech. The room was instantly filled with acrid, stinging gray smoke.
Through the smoke, a figure dropped down from the ceiling crawlspace.
Marco.
His designer suit was covered in plaster dust, his face twisted into an ugly, manic sneer of desperation. In his hand, he held a black silencer-equipped pistol.
He had bypassed Dominic entirely by using the attic maintenance shafts.
"Clever little nanny," Marco wheezed, his eyes wild and bloodshot as he leveled the gun at Leo. "You just had to open your mouth, didn't you? If you had kept your head down, you and your brat would have lived."
Leo looked up through the smoke, seeing the raven tattoo clearly exposed on Marco’s neck. The boy let out a shrill scream of absolute terror. "IT'S HIM! DADDY, IT'S HIM!"
"Shut up, you little mistake!" Marco spat, stepping forward, his finger tightening on the trigger aimed squarely at Leo's head. "I should have put a bullet in you three years ago in that car!"
Time slowed to an agonizing crawl.
There was no thought. No hesitation. No survival instinct for myself. There was only Leo—the broken, beautiful little boy who had finally learned to smile again.
I launched myself off the floor.
I threw my body directly in front of Leo, spreading my arms wide to shield him and Lily with everything I had.
*Pfft! Pfft!*
The impact hit me like the kick of a wild horse.
A searing, white-hot agony tore through my left shoulder and the side of my ribcage. The force of the bullets knocked the breath completely from my lungs, throwing me backward against the marble tub.
I collapsed onto the floor, clutching my side, warm, sticky blood pumping freely through my fingers, soaking through my robe and pooling onto the white tiles.
"MOMMY!" Lily shrieked in absolute horror.
"MISS ISABELLA!" Leo screamed, throwing his small hands over my wound, trying desperately to stop the bleeding, his face covered in my blood. "No! No, don't die! Daddy! DADDY!"
Marco sneered, stepping closer, raising the gun once more to finish us all. "Goodbye, sweetheart."
Before his finger could squeeze the trigger, the reinforced bathroom door was blown completely off its hinges with a tremendous, splintering roar.
Dominic charged through the smoke.
He wasn't human anymore. He was an avatar of pure, apocalyptic vengeance.
Without firing a shot, Dominic tackled Marco with the force of a freight train, slamming the traitor against the marble wall with such violence that the stone cracked beneath the impact.
The gun flew from Marco’s hand, skittering across the floor.
Dominic pinned Marco by the throat with his left hand, his massive tattooed fingers sinking deep into the flesh, lifting the grown man three inches off the floor. Marco gagged, kicking wildly, his hands clawing uselessly at Dominic’s iron grip.
"You killed my wife," Dominic’s voice wasn't loud. It was a demonic, gutter-born whisper that froze the very marrow in my bones. "You orphaned my son. You brought war into my home."
"Dom... please..." Marco choked out, his face turning dark purple, his eyes bulging.
"And you shot the woman I love."
Dominic drew a serrated combat knife from his tactical vest.
With brutal, blinding speed, Dominic drove the blade through Marco’s right shoulder—pinning the raven tattoo directly into the cracked marble wall.
Marco screamed, a sound of unimaginable agony.
"That's for Elena," Dominic hissed.
Then, Dominic brought his bare right fist down with bone-shattering force into Marco’s jaw. Once. Twice. Three times. The sickening crunch of breaking facial bones echoed through the bathroom.
Dominic didn't stop until Marco slumped limp, his neck broken, his body pinned like a dead crow to the ruined wall.
The silence that followed was suffocating.
Dominic dropped his bloody hands. He spun around, his chest heaving, his eyes frantically scanning the smoke-filled room.
When he saw me lying on the floor in a pool of my own blood, with Leo and Lily weeping over my body, his weapon clattered to the tile.
"ISABELLA!"
He threw himself across the marble, falling to his knees beside me. His large, trembling hands pressed down hard against the bullet wounds in my shoulder and ribs, trying in vain to stem the tide of crimson.
"No, no, no... look at me! Isabella, stay with me!" Dominic roared, his voice cracking into desperate, agonizing sobs. Tears streamed down his blood-smeared face, dripping onto my cold skin. "Don't you dare close your eyes! Dante, call the medical team! GET THEM UP HERE NOW!"
My vision was tunneling into darkness. The agonizing pain was slowly giving way to a strange, weightless numbness.
I lifted my trembling, blood-slicked hand and touched Dominic’s cheek, feeling the rough stubble and the hot, desperate tears of the most feared man in the city.
"Dominic..." I whispered, my voice barely audible over the roaring in my ears. "The children... are they safe?"
"They're safe, my love. They're alive because of you," he wept, pressing his forehead against mine, his tears mingling with my blood. "You saved them. Now let me save you. Please, Isabella... don't leave me. I can't do this without you. I love you. Do you hear me? I love you!"
"Take care... of Lily..." I breathed.
"I will take care of both of you forever, I swear on my soul!" he cried out, crushing my hand against his heart. "Stay with me! Isabella! STAY WITH ME!"
The green lights faded. The frantic cries of my daughter and Leo blurred into a distant echo.

And as Dominic’s desperate voice called my name through the encroaching shadows, the world went completely, peacefully black.
