Chapter 4 - The House of Cards CollapsesDavid turned, his face pale as paper. "Harold... please, I can explain—"

"Save it," Harold commanded coldly. He motioned to the two men in suits standing beside him. "This is Mr. Harrison from the forensic audit division. Two hours ago, while you were drinking scotch at the bar, Mr. Vance showed me a set of financial documents regarding your investment accounts."
David felt his stomach drop into a bottomless pit. "What... what documents?"
Mr. Harrison stepped forward, opening a leather folder. "Mr. Carter, it appears you've been misrepresenting your personal assets to secure loans from Montgomery Enterprises. You claimed ownership of several commercial properties downtown—properties that actually belong entirely to Emily’s design firm and her business partners."
"What?!" David shrieked, looking at Emily in horror. "That's impossible!"
Emily smiled thinly. "When I bought the historic brick buildings on 4th Street three years ago to expand my boutique, I used a holding company called Tri-Star Holdings—named after my three children. You saw the public filing documents, David, and because you were so arrogant, you assumed 'Tri-Star' was a small shell company you could claim as an asset on your loan applications without anyone checking."
David's knees felt weak. He grabbed the corridor handrail to keep from falling.
When he was building his new image as a successful entrepreneur to win over Harold Montgomery, David had inflated his net worth by listing several high-value commercial properties on his financial disclosures. He had assumed the holding company behind them belonged to an out-of-state investor who would never notice.
He had literally stolen his ex-wife's business assets on paper to trick his new bride’s family into letting him marry her.
"You fraud!" Olivia screamed, stepping up and slapping David across the face with a loud, ringing CRACK!
The strike echoed down the hallway. Olivia threw her bridal bouquet at his chest, tears of rage ruining her mascara.
"You lied about everything!" Olivia sobbed. "Your money, your past, your ex-wife! You used my father's name to get bank loans!"
"Olivia, baby, listen to me!" David pleaded, dropping to one knee on the carpet, trying to grab her hands. "I did it for us! I wanted to give you the life you deserved!"
"Don't touch her!" Harold roared, pulling his daughter behind him. "The wedding is over. I'm calling my legal team immediately to void the marriage license before it's even processed. And as for your position at my firm, David... you are fired. Effective five minutes ago."
"Harold, please! You can't do this to me!" David begged, tears finally welling in his eyes. "I have debts! The banks will take everything!"
"Then I suggest you find a good lawyer," Harold spat coldly, turning on his heel. "Come, Olivia. We are leaving."
The Montgomery family marched away down the corridor, leaving David collapsed on the floor, his tuxedo jacket rumpled, his hair messy, clutching his face in sheer despair.
Emily stood over him, looking down at the man who had once treated her like dirt.

"You always thought success was about looking rich to other people, David," Emily said softly, her tone laced with quiet sorrow for the man he had become. "You never understood that true success is about character. You built your life on a foundation of lies, pride, and cruelty. Don't be surprised when it crumbles under its own weight."
Without waiting for a response, Emily turned gracefully and walked back toward the ballroom to collect her children.
