Chapter 3 - The Silence of the WolvesThe silence that followed Evelyn’s descent was heavier than any gunfire Adrian had ever faced.

In the criminal underworld, silence was never peaceful. Silence meant weapons were being drawn. Silence meant a betrayal had just been discovered. Silence meant someone was about to die.
For thirty seconds, the entire Hawthorne Grand ballroom held its breath.
Travis Cole’s face drained of all colour, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. "Is... is that Parker? Did she... did she break into someone else's closet?"
"Shut up, Travis," Adrian said, his voice a low, dangerous growl.
He didn't take his eyes off her. As Evelyn reached the bottom of the grand staircase, a murmur finally swept through the crowd, but it wasn't the cruel mockery Travis had anticipated. It was a murmur of sheer, unadulterated awe.
Men who usually looked through women like glass were suddenly standing straight, adjusting their jackets, trying to catch her eye. Several high-ranking contractors from the New Jersey docks—men who didn't even know her name—instinctively parted the crowd to give her a clear path across the marble floor.
Evelyn walked with a posture that commanded the room. Every step was deliberate, graceful, and utterly fearless. She moved like a queen inspecting her conquered provinces.
As she approached Adrian and Travis, the temperature around them seemed to drop ten degrees.
"Good evening, Mr. Vale," Evelyn said. Her voice was no longer the soft, hesitant whisper she used over the office intercom. It was rich, cool, melodic, and carried an undeniable undertone of iron. "I trust I'm not late."
Adrian stared at her. Up close, the transformation was even more disorienting. The subtle scent of expensive bergamot and dark amber drifted past him, completely erasing the memory of her desk-side coffee and cheap paper folders.
"Evelyn," Adrian managed to say, his voice uncharacteristically rigid. He cleared his throat, forcing his executive composure back into place. "You... you look different from your personnel file."
"Personnel files are notoriously lacking in imagination, Mr. Vale," she replied smoothly, her dark eyes flashing with a sharp, brilliant intelligence. She turned her gaze to Travis, whose face was still a mask of pure shock. "Good evening, Mr. Cole. You look pale. Did someone step on your grave?"
Travis swallowed hard, his bravado entirely evaporated. "Uh... no, Parker. I just... wow. I mean, damn."
"Eloquent as always," Evelyn remarked without missing a beat.
Before Travis could recover his dignity, a tall, imposing figure stepped out from the surrounding crowd. It was Victor Vance, head of the rival Brooklyn syndicate—a man known for his brutal efficiency and his complete lack of respect for Adrian’s authority.
Vance wore a diamond-encrusted lapel pin and a predatory grin as he stopped directly in front of Evelyn, blocking her path to Adrian.
"Well, well," Vance purred, his eyes roaming over Evelyn with an offensive, appraising slowness. "I thought I knew every beautiful woman in this city, but I seem to have missed the most stunning one of all. Victor Vance," he added, extending a hand toward her bare shoulder. "And you are, gorgeous?"
The entire ballroom seemed to freeze again. Everyone knew Vance was baiting Adrian, testing the boundaries of what the younger boss would tolerate in public.
Adrian’s hand tightened around his bourbon glass so hard the crystal stem threatened to snap. A cold, murderous rage flared behind his dark eyes.
Before Adrian could step forward and break Vance’s wrist, Evelyn moved.
She didn't flinch. She didn't look to Adrian for protection.
Instead, she looked down at Vance’s outstretched hand, then slowly raised her eyes to meet his with a look of supreme, icy condescension.
"Keep your hands to yourself, Mr. Vance," Evelyn said, her voice cutting through the ambient music like a razor. "Unless, of course, you'd prefer the federal authorities to look a little closer at the shipping manifests from your Port Newark terminals next Tuesday."
Vance’s hand stopped mid-air. The colour instantly drained from his face, his smug smile vanishing into a look of absolute, unadulterated terror.
"What did you say?" Vance hissed, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper.
"I said," Evelyn repeated, leaning in just close enough for only him to hear, though the entire surrounding circle strained to catch every syllable, "that your offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands are currently being audited by someone who finds your tax evasion habits deeply unoriginal. Have a lovely evening."
With that, she stepped gracefully around the paralyzed syndicate boss, leaving Vance standing frozen like a statue carved from salt.

Evelyn turned back to Adrian, her expression softening into an infuriatingly serene mask.
"Shall we find a table, Mr. Vale?" she asked quietly. "Or are we going to stand here staring at each other all night?"
