Chapter 5 - Unraveling the Mistress

While the courtroom doors swung open to let in the roar of the media outside, a parallel drama was unfolding in a holding cell fifty miles away at the federal detention center in downtown Los Angeles.
Vanessa Cole sat on the edge of a stainless-steel bunk, wearing a coarse orange jumpsuit that clashed violently with her spray tan and blonde extensions. Her fingernails—once meticulously manicured with Swarovski crystals—were chipped and bare.
The heavy steel door clanged open.
Two federal marshals stepped aside, and a sleek, sharp-dressed woman walked in. It was Sarah Lin, lead corporate investigator for Claire Whitmore’s legal team.
Sarah closed the door behind her, sliding a single manila folder onto the small steel table bolted to the floor.
“Miss Cole,” Sarah said pleasantly, taking a seat opposite the former influencer.
Vanessa looked up, her eyes red-rimmed and furious. “I want my phone call! I told your people I want a lawyer! You can’t hold me here without bail—Ethan promised he would take care of everything, he told me his lawyers were handling—”
“Ethan Whitmore was stripped of his company, his assets, his home, and his freedom approximately twenty minutes ago by Judge Harrison Vance,” Sarah interrupted smoothly.
Vanessa’s mouth dropped open.
“What... what are you talking about?” she stammered. “He’s a multimillionaire! He has venture capitalists backing him! He bought me a penthouse in Tribeca!”
“He leased a penthouse using embezzled subsidiary funds, which federal prosecutors have seized as proceeds of wire fraud,” Sarah corrected, opening the folder to reveal a series of printed bank statements and signed corporate approval forms. “Furthermore, Miss Cole, our forensic team recovered every single text message, email, and digital correspondence between you and Ethan regarding the systematic diversion of Whitmore Learning Group assets.”
Vanessa stared at the papers, her face turning pale. “I didn't steal anything! He gave those things to me! He told me his wife was just a boring housewife who didn't understand the pressures of running a global enterprise!”
“And yet, your name is listed as the primary beneficiary on three separate shell companies receiving fraudulent vendor disbursements,” Sarah noted calmly, sliding a document across the table. “Here is your choice, Vanessa. You can maintain your loyalty to a man who is currently facing twenty years in federal prison for white-collar crimes and take the full fall for the corporate embezzlement conspiracy... or you can sign this cooperation agreement, testify to the extent of Ethan’s deliberate financial manipulation, and let the U.S. Attorney recommend a reduced sentence of probation and community service.”
Vanessa stared at the pen Sarah placed beside the paper.
Her hands shook violently. The illusion of high society, private jets, luxury dining, and effortless wealth had evaporated into the cold, gray reality of steel bars and federal indictments.
“He... he told me he was going to divorce her anyway,” Vanessa whispered, tears finally spilling down her cheeks, ruining her makeup. “He said she was nothing without him.”

“Turns out,” Sarah said, standing up and buttoning her coat, “he was entirely wrong about that.”
Ten seconds later, Vanessa Cole picked up the pen and signed her name at the bottom of the page.
