Chapter 6 - The First Thaw

Two days later, the storm had cleared, leaving the Long Island estate blanketed in a pristine, blinding blanket of winter white beneath a brilliant blue Christmas morning sky.

Inside the master guest suite, the scent of pine and fresh coffee filled the warm room.

Claire Bennett sat propped up against a mountain of plush down pillows, wrapped in a soft cashmere blanket. Her color had returned, her dark eyes bright and clear as she looked out the tall arched windows at the glittering snowscape outside.

A soft knock sounded at the door.

"Come in," she said softly.

The door opened, and Roman DeLuca stepped inside. He had removed his suit jacket, wearing a simple dark gray sweater that made him look less like a feared syndicate boss and more like an ordinary man. In his hands, he carried a heavy manila envelope and a steaming mug of tea.

He walked over and set them gently on the bedside table.

"How are you feeling?" Roman asked, his voice softer than Claire had ever heard it.

"I've been better," Claire smiled faintly, taking a sip of the tea. "Though considering I was supposed to be a human popsicle two nights ago, I'd say I'm doing remarkably well."

Roman pulled up a chair and sat down beside the bed. He looked at her for a long moment, a quiet intensity in his gray eyes.

"I owe you an apology, Claire," he said quietly.

She blinked in surprise. "An apology? Mr. DeLuca, you saved my life."

"I brought you into a house where you weren't protected," Roman replied, his jaw tightening slightly. "I allowed monsters to operate under my roof because I was too busy looking at spreadsheets and shipping manifests. That ends today."

He picked up the manila envelope and slid it across the blanket toward her.

Curious, Claire opened the flap and pulled out a thick stack of papers. She scanned the top page, her breath catching in her throat.

It was the legal discharge and zero-balance settlement of the $184,000 debt held by Meridian Capital. Stamped across the bottom in bold red ink: PAID IN FULL — DEBTS CLEARED PERMANENTLY.

Beneath it was a second document: a fully funded, guaranteed medical trust ensuring all future therapy and care for her sister, Lily, at Harbor Ridge Rehabilitation Center for the next ten years, completely free of charge.

Tears welled up in Claire’s eyes, spilling over her lashes before she could stop them. She looked up at Roman, her voice trembling. "What... what is this? How?"

"Vivian and her father are gone," Roman said simply, his tone absolute. "Their financial assets in this state have been liquidated to make right everything they broke. You don't owe anyone a single dime, Claire. And neither does your sister."

Claire clutched the papers to her chest, a sob breaking free from her throat as months of crushing, suffocating weight finally lifted from her shoulders. She wasn't drowning anymore. For the first time in eight years, she could actually breathe.

Roman reached out, his warm, strong hand gently covering hers where it rested on the blanket.

May you like

"You survived a blizzard that would have broken a lesser person," Roman murmured, his gray eyes holding hers with an intense, unwavering warmth. "You saved yourself, and you exposed the rot in my house. I don't want you working as a maid in my kitchen anymore, Claire."

She looked at him, her heart hammering against her ribs, not with fear, but with something entirely new. "What do you want me to do?"Whatever you want to do," Roman said, a faint, rare smile touching the corners of his mouth as the morning sun broke through the window, bathing them both in golden light. "Starting with Christmas dinner downstairs—where you sit at the head of the table, and nobody ever tells you to carry a tray again."
