CHAPTER 4 — THE FALL OF MEN WHO BELIEVED THEY WERE IMMUNE

The first domino fell within 72 hours.

A banking freeze.

Then a regulatory audit.

Then a leaked internal document showing Grupo Montiel’s dependency on Serrano-linked credit channels.

By the end of the week, Alejandro’s empire did not collapse.

It unraveled.

Quietly. Efficiently. Without drama.

Which somehow made it worse.

At a private emergency board meeting, Alejandro stood at the head of the table.

No one looked at him the same way anymore.

One director finally spoke.

“You didn’t just lose your wife,” the man said. “You antagonized a Serrano heir.”

Alejandro slammed his hand on the table.

“She is NOTHING—”

But even as he said it, his voice broke slightly.

Because deep down, he already knew the truth had changed shape.

Meanwhile, Valeria stood in a private training room inside Serrano headquarters.

Not medical recovery.

Not sympathy.

Reconstruction.

Elena watched as she practiced speaking to lawyers, directors, analysts.

Not as a victim.

As an authority.

“You hesitate at the end of sentences,” Elena said.

Valeria adjusted immediately. “I’m not used to being heard.”

“You will be.”

That night, Ernesto finally gave her access to the full Serrano board.

Her first vote was symbolic.

Her second was structural.

Her third shifted a multimillion-dollar acquisition away from Montiel-linked holdings.

And for the first time, Valeria understood something clearly:

Alejandro had never broken her.

He had simply introduced her to the world that would.

Two weeks later, Alejandro requested a meeting.

Not with lawyers.

Not with boards.

With her.

The request was denied.

The reply came back simple:

She does not meet former liabilities.

Alejandro stared at the message for a long time.

Then, quietly, he asked the question he had been avoiding since the lilies hit the floor.

“If she was never beneath me… what was I to her?”

No one answered.

At the Serrano estate, Valeria stood on a balcony overlooking the city.

Her ribs had mostly healed.

Her face no longer showed the worst of it.

But something else had changed.

Not hardness.

Clarity.

Ernesto approached beside her.

“He is falling apart,” he said.

Valeria nodded.

“I know.”

A pause.

“Do you want him destroyed?” Ernesto asked.

Valeria watched the city lights flicker.

Then she said something neither Ernesto nor Elena expected.

“No.”

She turned slightly.

“I want him to understand exactly what he did… while still having something left to lose.”

Ernesto studied her for a long moment.

May you like

Then, quietly:

“Good,” he said. “Then you are finally ready.”
