Chapter 6 - Dawn Over Lake Michigan
The sun rose slowly over Lake Michigan, painting the Chicago horizon in brilliant strokes of violet, amber, and gold.
On the private balcony of the Cade estate overlooking the lake, the air was crisp with the promise of a new spring. Inside the warm, sunlit nursery, little Clara was awake, babbling happily as she chased a wooden toy across the plush rug, her tiny heart beating strong, steady, and full of life.
Elizabeth stood by the balcony railing, wrapped in a soft cashmere shawl, watching the sunrise.
Footsteps approached softly from behind. Strong arms wrapped around her waist, pulling her back against a warm, solid chest. Nicholas rested his chin gently on her shoulder, breathing in the scent of her hair.
“You’re quiet this morning,” Nicholas murmured, kissing the side of her neck.
“I was just thinking about that night at the steakhouse,” Elizabeth replied, a soft, genuine smile touching her lips. “If the manager hadn’t shoved me… if you hadn’t walked into that restaurant to close that deal… where would we be right now?”
Nicholas tightened his arms around her, pulling her closer.
“We would have kept living in our separate shadows,” Nicholas said quietly. “Waiting for the world to break us completely.”
He turned her gently in his arms, looking down into her gray-blue eyes—eyes that no longer carried the exhaustion of survival, but the quiet peace of a new beginning. On her left ring finger, the simple platinum band caught the morning sunlight, sparkling with quiet elegance.
“What’s our next move, Mr. Vance?” Elizabeth teased softly, raising an eyebrow with a flash of her old spirit. “No board meetings. No hostile takeovers. What does a retired billionaire do with his time?”
Nicholas smiled, leaning down to press his lips softly against hers.
